Geometric Properties of Cross Section

Values which are based on the dimensions of the cross section of materials used in design.

1. Area – geometric property used in the design for tension and shear.

2. Moment of Inertia – geometric property used for stiffness.

CVIL 1114 – Principles of Steel Design| 1

3. Section Modulus – geometric property used in the design of beams or flexural members

4. Radius of Gyration – geometric property used for compression.

Examples:

1. Solve for the geometric properties of I500x59 with respect to x-axis.

2. Solve the geometric properties of the Tube with a diameter of 30mm and thickness of 5mm.

Additional Information: Tubes are measured by their outside diameter while Pipes are measured by
their inside diameter. Pipes are used to transport something while Tubes are used to construct
something.
