ASSIGNMENT 2

FLUID MECHANICS AND MECHINERY

16 MARKS

1.The rate of flow of water through a horizontal pipe is 0.3 m³/s. The diameter of the pipe is
suddenly enlarged from 25 cm to 50 cm. The pressure intensity in the smaller pipe is 14N/m3.
Determine the

(i) loss of head due to sudden enlargement

(ii)Pressure intensity in the large pipe and

(iii) power lost due to enlargement.

2.A horizontal pipe of 400 mm diameter is suddenly contracted to a diameter of 200 mm. The
pressure intensities in the large and small pipe are given as 15 N/cm² and 10 N/cm² respectively.
Find the loss of head due to contraction if Cc= 0.62. Determine also the rate of flow of water.

3.Derive the equation for the friction loss in a pipeline and find the loss of head due to friction in
a pipe of 300 m long and 150 mm diameter when the discharge is 2.75m3/min and the resistance
coefficient f=0.01.

4.An oil of specific gravity 0.80 and kinematic viscosity 15×10 m³/s flows in a smooth pipe of
12 cm diameter at a rate of 150 lit/min. Determine whether the flow is laminar or turbulent. Also,
calculate the velocity at the centre line and the velocity at a radius of 4 cm. Whet is head loss for
a length of 10 m? What will be the entry length? Also determine the wall shear.

5.oil of mass density 800kg/m3 and dynamic viscosity 0.02 poise flows through 50mm diameter
pipe of length 500m at the rate of 0.19L/s. determine

1.reynolds number of flow,

2.centreline velocity,
3.pressure gradient,

4.loss of pressure in 500m length,

5.wall shear strees stress and

6.power required to maintain the flow.

6.A fluid of viscosity 0.7 Pa.S(Nm/s) and specific gravity 1.3 is flowing through a pipe diameter
120 mm. The maximum shear stress at the pipe value is 205.2 N/m². Determine the pressure
gradient, Reynolds number and average velocity.
7.An oil of viscosity 0.096 Ns/m² and specific gravity of 1.59 flows through a horizontal pine of
50 mm diameter with a pressure drop of 6 kN/m² per metre length of pipe Determine the:

1.Rate of flow

2.Shear stress at the pipe wall

3.Power required for 100 m length of the pipe to maintain the flow.

8.Oil flows through a pipe 150 mm in diameter and 650 mm in length with a velacere 0.5 m/s. If
the kinematic viscosity of oil is 18.7x10-4 m2/s, find the power lost in overcanin friction. Take the
specific gravity of oil as 0.9.
