Chapter 2

Engineering Design
Objectives

• Define Engineering Design

• Describe the steps in Engineering Design process
• Explain how to define a problem and its constraints
• Identify the various methods of Ideation
• Summarize the process of Creating and Testing design solutions
• Explain how to communicate the final design solution
• Describe the purpose of an Engineering Notebook
Engineering Design

• The Creative application of Technology to design a system or

Product or Process to solve a given problem or meet a given
need.
• It is open ended ( Many solution available rather than one
solution)
• It involves finding best possible solution for a given problem.
Engineering Design Process

1. Problem Definition
2. Idea Generation
3. Solution Creation
4. Testing / Analysis
5. Final Solution / Output
6. Design Improvement
Activity 1 – Problem Definition

• Identify a problem from Daily Life

• Think about to redesign the existing Product
• Decide about to design a completely new Product
• Identify the Constraints and Criteria
Activity 2 – Brain Storming

• Forming a group in Class for Brainstorming session

• Explain the Problem, Constraints and the findings of research
• Write down all the ideas in Worksheet
• Draw sketches if needed
• Keep accurate records of all ideas to evaluate them
Activity 3 – Researching

• Use internet and other resources to research the problems and solutions similar
to current problem
• Making sure of knowing all about the product that is to be designed
• Noting the ideas on worksheet generated through researching
Activity 4 – Evaluating Solutions
• Discarding all the ideas that will fail to solve the problem or meet the
criteria
• Identify and fill the worksheet with ideas that could solve the problem or
fail to solve the problem
• Evaluate each of the remaining ideas based on the problem and criteria.
• Rank the remaining ideas from the best to worst using the work sheet
Activity 5 – Communicating the Solution

• Communicate the solution that is chosen

• Drawing it with as much as detail possible to make it understand
• Use CAD package to communicate the solution
• Draw the solution in Worksheet
Activity 6 – Test / Analysis

• Test and Analyse the solution against the problem statement and
Criteria
• Conduct necessary test to evaluate the solution
• If the design fails to meet the criteria then go back to previous step
Activity 7 – Final Solution / Output

• Create an Specification sheet to communicate the Design Solution

• Create Dimensions multiview drawings of design solution
• Create isometric drawing of design
Activity 8 – Design Improvement

• Think of any changes that could make to improve your design

solution and write them on worksheet
• Create Dimensions multiview drawings of improved design
solution
• Create isometric drawing of improved design
