Grade Level: IGCSE/O Level

Subject: Physics
Topic: Gas Pressure and Volume (Boyle's Law)
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Objectives
- Understand the relationship between the pressure and volume of a gas at
- Use the PHET simulation to observe and analyze how changes in volume
- Derive and validate Boyle's Law through experimentation and graphing.

Materials
- PHET Simulation on Gas Laws (Link provided)
- Laptops/Tablets with internet access for each student pair
- Graphing software or tools (Excel, Google Sheets)
- Worksheet for data collection and analysis
- Whiteboard and markers

Lesson Outline

1. Introduction (15 minutes)

- Begin with a brief discussion on the properties of gases, including pressu
- Explain that todays focus will be on how gas pressure changes with volu
- Present the mathematical relationship of Boyles Law: P1 V1 = P2 V2.
- Show a quick demonstration or example problem on the board to illustrat
2. Simulation Activity (40 minutes)

Background knowledge Pressure of a gas is the force per unit area that the gas enters on surface.
Pressure is measured in pastels (Pa), Where 1Pa = 1 Nm⁻² . The pressure of a
gas depends on its temperature, the volume of the gas container and on the
mass of the gas in the container.

Experiment 1 - Aim Investigate how pressure changes with volume, by keeping the number of
particles and temperature constant. (Boyle’s Law)

Process Step 1 - Open the link provided.

Step 2 - Get to know how you can vary the physical quantities in the
simulation.(5 mins)
Step 3 - Start the experiment by giving one or two pump so particles enter the
container
Step 4 - Adjust the temperature to 300K and keep it constant through out this
experiment 1.
Step 5 - Change the particle number to 100 keep it constant through out this
experiment 1.
Step 6 - You need to start observing the pressure form 5nm of volume.Take 5
more reading for volume and pressure. Complete the table with the readings
and calculation.

Step 7 - Analyzing the relationship between volume and pressure.

a) Identify the quantities in the experiment

i) Independent variable :…………………………………………….

ii) Dependent variable :………………………………………………

b) What pattern did you observe in the pressure when you increase the
volume.

……………………………………………………………………………………………

c) What statement can you suggest for the relationship between the pressure
and volume?

d) Deduce Boyle’s law with the help of above statement and the quantities that
you kept constant though out this experiment.

Step 8 :Use any one of the following application (EXCEL, NUMBER,GOOGLE

SHEET) to plot two graphs
a) P verses V graph
b) P verses 1/V graph.

Paste the graphs below:

Step 9:Did the stated relationship matches with the graph? Explain.

experiment when
a) You increase the temperature and keep the number of particles same as
in the experiment 1.
