CB2101 Introduction to Managerial Accounting


2024-25 Semester A
Course Outline

Course Aims

This course aims to:

1. provide students with basic knowledge of management accounting for a career in


business as well as being a foundation for advanced management accounting courses.
Basic management accounting knowledge includes: technical knowledge in identifying,
evaluating and computing costs by applying various tools of management and product
costing systems for strategic decision-making; preparing reports and analyzing strategic
planning and management performance in order to enhance decision making;
implementing a competitive strategy using the balanced scorecard; and

2. extend knowledge of inventory valuation gained in CB2100 to cover


inventory valuation in a manufacturing company.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

normal job-order costing and process costing.
2. MAKE business decisions, including:
USE relevant costs in decisions of make or buy, accept or
reject a special order, drop or keep a segment, utilization
of a constrained resource; APPLY break-even analysis in
a single-product company to make decisions on pricing,
volume and cost reduction.
3. CREATE a budget and ANALYZE deviations from budgeted
expenses using analysis of expense variances.
4. EXPLAIN how management accounting is used in
performance evaluation.
5. CRITICALLY EVALUATE important recent innovations in
management accounting, e.g., activity-based costing
and the balanced scorecard.
6. APPLY ethical concepts in selected management
accounting situations.

Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs)

Important announcements, amendments to teaching schedule, lecture


notes and solutions to tutorial and practice questions will be posted on the
Canvas. Students should visit it on a regular basis (at least twice a week)
to download the relevant materials for study and class preparation.

This course consists of a 2-hour lecture and a 1-hour tutorial per week.
Students should attend both lecture and tutorial. Lectures introduce the
main topics each week and provide students with the chance to start
working on practical questions relevant to each topic. Students are
responsible for having completed the reading assignments prior to
attending lectures each week. Tutorials provide students with a more
detailed understanding about how to complete both theoretical and
practical questions about each topic area. Students are responsible for
attempting all exercise questions prior to attending tutorial classes each
week. Questions indicated with “*” will be discussed in the tutorial
classes. Other questions may or may not be discussed in the tutorial
classes depending on time. Suggested answers to all exercise questions
will be released on the Canvas site weekly after all tutorial classes have
been held. Please refer to the Teaching Schedule on the last page for the
full list of exercise questions and weekly coverage of topics.

Participation (5%)
Attendance, cooperative attitude, active participation in class (both
lectures and tutorials) will contribute 5% towards the overall
coursework marks. Students are encouraged to answer instant pop-up
questions related to course materials, which will be raised using iLearn
learning platform in every lecture. Students are required to use a laptop

or personal digital device, such as smartphone or tablet, to access the
questions. The log-in link for iLearn platform is:

Online Assignments (15%)


1. Homework (5%): There will be a total of 5 homework assigned to
students via CONNECT. The homework is based on the exercise questions
(indicated with *) of topics 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 from the Teaching Schedule.
Please note that homework will be available on CONNECT without further
announcements. Please pay attention to CONENCT for the start and due
time. Late submissions will NOT be accepted.
Your homework scores are available right after submission, and all
detailed solutions are available after the due date. There are unlimited
attempts for each question and the system will record scores of each of
your attempts. Please note that the CONNECT website only shows the
average score of all your attempts. However, the system saves your
scores of all your attempts. Please be assured that your BEST score for
each question will be used for homework assessment.

2. Quiz (10%): There will be an online quiz assigned to you via CONNECT.
Each question can only be attempted ONCE. The quiz will be made
available to you for a total of 6 days. However, ONCE YOU START, you have 3
HOURS to complete the quiz. (EVEN IF YOU PRESS THE SAVE AND EXIT
BUTTON, THE TIMER WILL CONTINUE TO COUNT DOWN.) If you do not
complete the quiz, the answers will be submitted automatically at the end of
3 hours. Late submissions will NOT be accepted.
Quiz Available time: 9:00am Nov 18 (Mon) – 9:00pm Nov 23 (Sat) (Topics 1
to 9)

Mid-Term Test (30%): The Mid-term test will be held on October 26


(Saturday). Midterm test covers materials from Topics 1 to 6 (i.e.,
Chapters 1 to 7). More details about the mid-term test will be announced
on Canvas in due course.

Final Examination (50%): The final examination is comprehensive and


will cover all content taught in the course. It will include numerical
problems, theories and conceptual issues. The exact date and time will be
announced in due course.

Required Textbook

Peter C. Brewer, Ray H. Garrison, and Eric W. Noreen, Introduction to


Managerial Accounting, McGraw-Hill, 2024 Release, Smartbook.

Students are required to purchase the stand-alone ebook license (i.e.,


CONNECT access). CONNECT access license allows you to access ebook,
online assignments, quizzes and mid-term test. A hard copy textbook
is NOT required. If you wish to purchase a hard copy textbook in
addition to the ebook, you can also buy it at the bookstore.

Online homework and quizzes will be assigned to students via the


Connect system. Students need to register to Connect via Canvas.
After online registration, students will be able to complete and submit
their homework or quizzes.

Important Policies

1. Students are required to pass both coursework and


examination components to guarantee to pass the course.
Failing either component may lead to failure in the course.
The passing mark is generally 50.

2. All students registered in the course are required to attend


scheduled quiz, test and examinations. Absences in quiz, test and

examinations will automatically lead to zero marks. NO make-up
quiz and test will be offered to students.

3. For illness or other circumstances related to assessment, please


refer to the University's Academic Regulations.

a. For final examination and coursework assessments with a


weighting of 20% or above, you must submit an application
for mitigation to your home department following the
procedures stated on the University website in accordance to
Academic Regulations on Illness or other Circumstances
Related to Assessment.

b. For coursework assessments with a weighting of less than


20%, you must submit an application for mitigation to the
Course Leader.

Note that reasons such as student activities, family or


personal reasons, sports or community services are NOT
legitimate reasons for absence.

For the mitigation request on the Mid-Term test which is


successfully approved, the allotted marks for the test will
be based on the final examination grade performance. For
the mitigation request on other coursework components
(e.g., CONNECT quizzes) which is successfully approved, the
marks will be based on the remaining coursework
assessment components. For the mitigation request on the
Final Examination which is successfully approved, a
supplementary exam will be given.

4. Late submission of assessment tasks

Late submission of assessment tasks will NOT be accepted.

5. Academic honesty

Academic honesty is central to the conduct of academic work and


academic dishonesty is regarded as a serious offence in the

6. Email communications

In order to address your requests in a timely manner, we adopt the


following approach: First, please contact your respective
tutors via emails;
If your issues are not resolved by the first attempt or
cannot be resolved (e.g., mitigation request), please
contact the course instructor via emails. This way, we can
better answer your questions and deal with massive emails in a
timely manner.

7. The use of GenAI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) is prohibited in all


assessment tasks.
