4. Potential hazards

The liflex NG lithium battery is safe for use when handled within the parameters specified by iaE.
Incorrect handling or circumstances leading to improper operation can cause a leakage of battery
contents and decomposition products, as well as associated strong reactions that pose a risk to
health and the environment. Since a wide variety of chemical ingredients are used, the instructions
for immediate action and first aid measures must always be followed in the event of an accident.
Lithium batteries are hermetically sealed and harmless if the precautions for use and handling are
observed.

Warning

Never use chargers for the liflex NG battery that are not suitable for the battery type. Do not short‐
circuit. Do not expose to rain. Do not clean by sandblasting. Do not cover with water. Do not subject
to mechanical damage (pierce, deform, disassemble, etc.) Do not heat above the permissible
temperature or burn, do not operate or store below the permissible temperature.
Keep the battery away from children.
Always keep the battery dry and cool.

Contact with leaked battery components poses a risk to health and the environment. Always wear
personal protective equipment and respiratory protection when coming in contact with batteries in
abnormal conditions (leaked contents, deformation, discoloration, dents, etc.). Lithium batteries, for
instance, can react very severely in combination with fire. Battery components with considerable
energy can be emitted in the process.

Safety manual liflex NG 20220323 V04.docx JK 4

5. Handling and operational safety:

The liflex NG lithium battery must be handled in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions at
all times. This applies in particular to compliance with the limits for maximum current load, charging
and discharging cut‐off voltages as well as mechanical and thermal loads.
The liflex NG lithium battery and the corresponding chargers are synchronised with each other and
must not be modified or manipulated under any circumstances, as this can lead to significant safety
risks

Danger

As with other batteries, the liflex NG can continue to pose a risk even when it appears to be
discharged. On the one hand, they can have a very high short‐circuit current. On the other hand,
high‐voltage lithium batteries (above 75 volts) pose a risk of fatal electric shock even at the minimum
allowable end‐of‐discharge voltage. If the battery is too deeply discharged, liflex NG will be
permanently damaged. Do not operate a deeply discharged liflex NG again. Avoid excessive charging
voltages and overcharging under all circumstances. Doing so can directly cause critical situations, but
also negatively impact battery life. For this reason, use only suitable chargers.

6. Structure and information on components

The energy storage of the liflex NG battery system is based on prismatic lithium iron phosphate cells
(LiFePO4 / LFP), which are recognised as safe electrochemistry and UN38.3 tested. The cells consist
of a laser‐welded aluminium housing with safety burst valve. The battery is installed in a sheet steel
housing with IP54 protection. The Battery Management System NG (BMS NG) monitors the individual
cells as well as the battery for compliance with limit values even in the event of foreseeable
mishandling and protects them from critical conditions.
However, although the battery is protected against overload, short circuit, incorrect charging by an
unsuitable charger, too high or too low temperature, such mishandling must not be risked under any
circumstances.

Safety manual liflex NG 20220323 V04.docx JK 5

Each cell consists of a hermetically sealed, laser‐welded aluminium housing with a safety burst valve, which
contains a number of chemicals and materials that can pose a hazard if released.

7. First aid measures

Lithium cells and batteries do not pose a hazard if handled and stored properly. The information
below is only relevant if the battery is destroyed and there is direct contact with the contents. If
substances (dust, liquid) are released from the battery cells, the following must be observed:

a. In case of contact with skin or eyes:

In case of contact with skin or eyes, clean the affected area(s) extensively,
rinse them with water for at least 15 minutes, and seek immediate medical attention if necessary.
In case of contact with the eyes, rinse them thoroughly and additionally consult a doctor in any
event.

b. Burn injuries:

If burn injuries occur, they must be properly treated. It is also advised to contact a doctor.

c. Respiratory injuries:

In case of intensive smoke development or gas release, leave the room immediately. In case of large
quantities of smoke or gas, or irritation of the respiratory tract, consult a doctor. If possible, provide
adequate ventilation.

Safety manual liflex NG 20220323 V04.docx JK 6

d. If a dangerous substance was swallowed:

Rinse mouth and surrounding area with water. Seek medical attention immediately.

8. Fire fighting measures

If the liflex NG in use catches fire, it can normally be put out with water.
Fires in the vicinity of the batteries can be fought with conventional extinguishing agents. The fire of
a battery cannot be assessed independently from the surrounding fire.

The cooling effect of water effectively inhibits the spread of fire to battery cells that have not yet
reached a (‘thermal runaway’) critical temperature.
The widespread availability of water also speaks in favour of the use of water.
As with any fire, the resulting fire gases can cause damage to health when inhaled. Sufficient
ventilation must therefore be ensured.

9. Measures in case of accidental leakage

If the battery is damaged, an electrolyte can be released. Batteries should be sealed airtight in a
plastic bag, along with dry sand, chalk powder (CaCOJ) or vermiculite. Traces of electrolyte can be
soaked up with a dry paper towel. Avoid direct skin contact by wearing protective gloves. Rinse with
plenty of water afterwards. Wear personal protective equipment appropriate to the situation
(protective gloves, protective clothing, face protection, respiratory protection).

10. Handling and storage

Observe the warnings on the batteries as well as the points mentioned above carefully at all times.
In addition, the operating instructions of devices in which the battery is used must be observed. The
battery may only be used in a device or appliance if the device or appliance [hier war der deutsche
Text nicht zuende]. Incorrectly dimensioned batteries can cause damage to the unit or appliance and
possibly lead to an electric shock. Furthermore, it can lead to rapid ageing of the battery.
In case of doubt, always contact the manufacturer of the device or the battery.

Attention! Some metal parts of the battery cells are always energised, so do not place any objects or
tools on the battery. Observe the accident prevention regulations and DIN EN 50272‐3. Insulated
screw heads prevent the battery poles from short‐circuiting. Do not remove them.
Lithium batteries should preferably be stored at room temperature and in a dry place; large
temperature fluctuations should be avoided. (e. g. do not store near radiators, do not expose to
direct sunlight).
Do not modify, open, destroy, puncture, bend the battery. Do not expose it to heat, dispose of it in
fire, short circuit it, immerse it in water, store or operate it in pressurised containers.
If substances are released due to damage or improper handling, the above mentioned points must
be followed. This applies especially to the use of personal protective equipment.

Safety manual liflex NG 20220323 V04.docx JK 7

In general, when storing larger quantities of batteries, it is mandatory to consult with the local
authorities.

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

The manufacturer confirms compliance within the limits for electromagnetic emissions and immunity
to interference as well as the static electricity discharge test according to DIN EN 61000‐6‐4, DIN EN
61000‐6‐2 and DIN EN 61000‐4‐2 as well as the normative references mentioned therein.
Modifications to electrical or electronic components and their configuration may only be made with
the written permission from the manufacturer.

Interference with medical devices due to non‐ionising radiation

Electrical devices that emit non‐ionising radiation (e.g. wireless data transmission) can interfere with
the function of medical devices (pacemakers, hearing aids, etc.) of the operator and lead to
malfunctions. Check with a doctor or the manufacturer of the medical device whether it can be used
in the vicinity of the appliance operated with the liflex NG.
The components are designed to be maintenance‐free, but it is recommended to check the wiring
and plug contacts for damage or wear and tear once a year and to read out and evaluate the logging
data.
The battery is permanently monitored by the battery management system.

11. Exposure controls / personal protective equipment
