1. State Gauss’s law in electrostatics. A cube with each side a is kept in an electric field given by 3
, (as is shown in the figure) where C is
a positive dimensional constant. Find out
(i) the electric flux through the cube, and
(ii) the net charge inside the cube

Ans : Gauss’s law : The surface integral of electric field (electric flux) over any closed surface
is times the charge enclosed in it.

2. Five identical horizontal square metal plates each of area A are placed at a distance d apart in air 3
and connected to the terminals A and B as shown in the figures (a) and (b). Find the effective
capacitance between the two terminals A and B.
Ans :

3. Two identical parallel plate capacitors A and B are connected to a battery of E volts with the 3
switch S closed. The switch is now opened and the free space between the plates of the capacitors
is filled with a dielectric of dielectric constant K. Find the ratio of the total electrostatic energy
stored in both capacitors before and after the introduction of the dielectric.
Ans : When switch S is closed energy stored in each capacitor will be the same.

∴ Total energy stored initially, Ui = UA + UB = C0 E2 and, charge on each capacitor,

Q = C0 E ...(ii)

When switch S is opened and dielectric is introduced between plates then

CA′ = CB′ = KC 0

∵ P.D. across A = E

∴ Energy stored in A =

Energy stored in both the capacitors after the insertion of dielectric is calculated as

4. A charge Q is distributed uniformly on a ring of radius R. A sphere of equal radius R is 4

constructed with its centre at the periphery of the ring. Find the flux of the electric field through the
surface of the sphere.

Ans : Since, ∆AOO′ and ∆BOO′ are equilateral triangles.

5. An electric dipole consists of charges ±2.0 × 10–8C separated by a distance of 2.0 × 10–3 m. It is 4
placed near a long line charge of linear charge density 4.0 × 10–4 C/m as shown in the figure, such
that the negative charge is at a distance of 2.0 cm from the line charge. Find the force acting on the
dipole.

Ans :

Fnet = 0.33 N towards the line charge.

6. Three identical capacitors C1, C2 and C3 of capacitance 6 μF each are connected to a 12 V 4

battery as shown.
Find (i) charge on each capacitor. (ii) equivalent capacitance of the network and (iii) energy stored
in the network of capacitors.

Ans : As C1 and C2 are in series,

7. In the arrangement of capacitors shown here, the energy stored in the 6 μF capacitor is E. Find 4
the following:
(a) Energy stored in the 12 μF capacitor.
(b) Energy stored in the 3 μF capacitor.
(c) Total energy drawn from the battery.

Ans :

8. (a) Find equivalent capacitance between A and B in the combination given below. Each capacitor 4
is of 2 mF capacitance.

(b) If a dc source of 7 V is connected across AB, how much charge is drawn from the source and
what is the energy stored in the network?
Ans :

∵ C2, C3 and C4 are in parallel

∵ CP = C2 + C3 + C4 = 6 mF

Now, C1 , CP and C5 are in series

(b) Charge drawn from the source of 7 V

You are given an air filled parallel plate capacitor C1. The space between its plates is now filled 2
with slabs of dielectric constants K1 and K2 as shown in C2. Find the capacitance of the capacitor
C2 if area of the plates is A and distance between the plates is d.

Ans :

10. (a) Compare the individual dipole moment and the specimen dipole moment for H2O molecule 5
and O2 molecule when placed in
(i) absence of external electric field
(ii) presence of external electric field.
Justify your answer.
(b) Given two parallel conducting plates of area A and charge densities +σ and –σ. A dielectric slab
of constant K and a conducting slab of thickness d each are inserted in between them as shown.
(i) Find the potential difference between the plates.
(ii) Plot E versus x graph, taking x = 0 at positive plate and x = 5d at negative plate.

Ans : (a)

(b) (i) P.D. between the plates of a capacitor is calculated as

11. Two parallel plate capacitors A and B have the same area of plates and same separation 5
between them. ‘A’ has air between the plates while ‘B’ contains a dielectric medium er = 4.
(a) Calculate the capacitance of each capacitor of equivalent capacitance of the combination is 4
mF. (b) Calculate the potential difference between the plates of ‘A’ and ‘B’. (c) Estimate the ratio of
electrostatic energy stored in ‘A’ and ‘B’.

Ans :

or CA = 5mF

⇒ CB = 20mF

(b) Ceq = 4mF

and V = 15V

∴ Q = Ceq V = 4 × 10–6 × 15

= 60 × 10–6 C

Since, in series charge remains same

12. Two metal plates form a parallel plate capacitor. The distance between the plates is d. A metal 1
sheet of thickness and of the same area is introduced between the plates. What is the ratio of
the capacitance in the two cases?
(a) 2 : 1 (b) 3 : 1
(c) 2 : 1 (d) 5 : 1

area of capacitor is divided into two equal halves and filled with two media having dielectric
constant k1 = 2 and k2 = 4 as shown in the figure. The capacitance of the system will now be

(a) 10 μF (b) 20 μF
(c) 30 μF (d) 40 μF

Ans :

14. There are two insulated charged spheres of radii 20 cm and 25 cm respectively. Both have equal 1
charge Q. If they are connected by a copper wire and then separated, then

(a) charge on 20 cm sphere is greater.

(b) both spheres will have the same charge.
(c) charge on 25 cm sphere is greater.
(d) charge on each will be 2Q.

Ans : (c)

15. Which of the following will remain unaffected if a glass slab is introduced between the plates of 1
a charged parallel plate capacitor?

(a) Electric charge

(b) Electric energy
(c) Capacitance
(d) Electric field intensity

Ans : (a)
