Week 9 Tutorial Activity – March 14-15, 2024

The following questions are intended to be similar to the questions on Practice Test 2 (and the
actual Test 2). Depending on how prepared everyone is, your tutorial may write this quietly for
the first half of tutorial and then take up the answers in the second half. Alternatively, everyone
may work as a group to solve the questions and discuss them as a tutorial throughout the hour.
Your TA will facilitate the decision on which format you will use.

For each question, you will submit you will submit answers to the following parts (a), (b),
and (c) to https://www.gradescope.ca/courses/14161 under “Week 9 Tutorial”.

(a) What is this question testing me on?

(b) How would I identify a similar question on Test 2?

(c) What is the answer and how did I find it?

1. Does the integral below converge or diverge? (Yes/No)

Aiverge
In this question, c and p are real constants. Find an integral of the form
Z 1
c
dx that you can
2 xp
use to compare with the integral below.
Z 1
c
Then explain in 1-3 sentences how we can use “comparison” with dx to show that your
2 xp
“yes” or “no” answer is correct.

2. Let ⌦ be the finite region bounded between f (x) = (x 2) + 2 and g(x) = x.

2.(a) Write an integral that calculates the area of ⌦. You do NOT have to evaluate the in-
tegral.

2.(b) Write an integral that calculates the volume created by rotating ⌦ around the line x = 1.
You do NOT have to evaluate the integral.

2.(c) Write an integral that calculates the volume created by rotating ⌦ around the line y = 4
You do NOT have to evaluate the integral.

3. There is bioluminescent material that produces L(r) = r2 e3r 4 lumens of light along a ring
of radius r. How many total lumens of light would be produced by a flat circular panel of this
material, where the outer radius of the panel is 3 cm? Write an integral that will calculate this
value. You do NOT have to evaluate the integral.

Hints for Question 2: We are looking for integrals of the form ⇤ d⇤. To fill in each

square, answer the following questions.

• Does each x-coordinate correspond to a di↵erent cross-section? Does each y-coordinate corre-
spond to a di↵erent cross-section? This will tell you to write dx or dy

• Depending on your answer to the previous question, write down the x- or y-values of the
intersection points. In other words, find the biggest and smallest x-values or biggest and small-
est y-values of any cross-section.

• When you rotate a point on y = f (x) around the axis of rotation, does it create a circle
with a bigger or smaller radius than a point on y = g(x)?

• What is the formula for the area of a circle?

Hints for Question 3: Consider the units you were given and the units you are asked for.

Hints for Question 4: Try the method of “separation of variables”. Note that if y(2) = 0,
that means the point (x, y) = (0, 2) is on the graph of your solution function.
