(UGC - AUTONOMOUS) II B. Tech I Semester Regular Examinations, MARCH 2023 THERMODYNAMICS (MECHANICAL ENGINEERING) Time: 3 Hours Max Marks: 70 Note: This Question Paper contains two Parts A and B Part A is compulsory which carries 10 marks. Five questions from five units. Answer all questions in Part A at one place only. Part-B consists of 10 Questions (numbered from 2 to 11) carrying 12 marks each. Each of these questions is from one unit and may contain a, b, c as sub-questions. For each question there will be an either/or choice (that means there will be two questions from each unit and the student should answer only one question). PART – A (5x2 = 10 Marks) 1. Marks Bloom Level CO a What is meant by thermodynamic equilibrium? 2 1 1 b Write the limitations of first law of thermodynamics. 2 1 2 c Write the expression for COP of a heat pump and refrigerator. 2 1 3 d What is saturation temperature and saturation pressure? 2 1 4 e Draw P-V and T-S diagrams of Diesel cycle. 2 1 5 PART – B (5x12 = 60 Marks) Marks Bloom Level CO 2 a) Define and explain thermodynamic systems. 6 b) Draw the isochoric, isobaric, isothermal, adiabatic and 2 1 polytropic processes in a single P-v diagram. Give reason 6 for the shape of each process OR 3 a) Define property of a system with any two examples. Why 4 thermodynamic properties are taken as coordinates in thermodynamics? b) Explain free expansion? Why the displacement work is 4 2 1 absent in free expansion? c) How the state function varies from path functions with one 4 example each? *** 4 a) How the Zeroth law of Thermodynamics forms the basis 4 for the measurement of temperature? 3 2 b) Derive the steady flow energy equation and apply this on 8 Turbine. OR 5 a) Apply the first law of thermodynamics to a closed system 6 undergoing a change state and show that energy is a property of the system. b) If a gas of volume 6000 cm3 and at a pressure of 100 kPa 3 2 is compressed quasi- statically according to pV2 = constant 6 until volume becomes 2000 cm3, determine the final pressure and work transfer. *** 6 (a) State and explain Kelvin-Plank and Clausius statements. 6 (b) Derive the expression for thermal efficiency of Carnot 3 3 cycle. Also draw P-v and T-s diagrams. 6 OR 7 A Carnot engine takes heat from an infinite reservoir at 550 0C and rejects it to a sink 275 0C. Half of the work delivered by the engine is used to run generator and the other half is used to run heat pump which takes heat at 2750C and rejects it at 440 0C. 12 4 3 Express the heat rejected at 440 0C by the heat pump as % of heat supplied to the engine at 550 0C. If the operation of the generator is 500W, Find the heat rejected/hour by the heat pump at 440 0C? *** 8 a) What is critical state? Explain the terms critical pressure, 5 critical volume and critical temperature of water? b) A steam pressure of holding capacity 4 m3 contains a mixture of saturated water and saturated steam at 2500C. 7 3 4 The mass of the liquid present is 1 ton. Determine (i) Quality; (ii) Specific Volume; (iii) Specific Enthalpy; (iv) Specific Entropy and (v) Specific Internal Energy of steam OR 9 a) Explain Dalton’s law of partial pressure and Amagat’s law 6 of additive volumes. b) Derive the expressions for equivalent gas constant, 3 4 molecular weight, internal energy and enthalpy for 6 mixture of perfect gases. *** 10 In a steam power plant 1 MW is added at 7000C in the boiler, 0.58 MW is taken at out at 400C in the condenser, and the pump work is 0.02 MW. Find the plant thermal efficiency. Assuming the 12 3 5 same pump work and heat transfer to the boiler is given, how much turbine power could be produced if the plant were running in a Carnot cycle? OR 11 a) Derive the expression for air standard thermal efficiency 6 of Otto cycle in terms of compression ratio. b) Derive the expression for mean effective pressure of Otto 3 5 cycle in terms of compression ratio and explosion/pressure 6 ratio
