Human decontamination

Design requirements:
• Must have an outside entry door minimum 3 meters (10 feet) away from entrance
(Door opens outside the building)
• Has internal door that gives access to corridor of ER or treatment room (Door opens to
corridor)
• Space of room at least 7.5 m^2 (80 square feet)
• Floors are self-coving to height of 15.24 cm (6 inches)
• Contains dedicated holding tank for treatment of drain and disposal of it
• Contains two or more hand held shower heads with temperature controls and floor
drain
• Fixtures shall be acid resistant
• Portable or an oxygen outlet, at each shower Tolley, should be provided and Suction
• There should be a space for shower trolley
• All surfaces are smooth, nonporous, scrubbable, nonabsorptive, nonperforated

FF&E:

• Dispenser • Shower
• Hand washing station (kol 7aga • Decontamination kit
feha)
• Eye wash
• Hook • Vacuum
• Trash can • Shower trolley
• Oxygen • chair
Emergency shower must be found in all hospitals if there is no decontamination room or suite in
the ER department
Decontamination kit could be in nuclear medicine and laboratory
Treatment room

Design requirements:

• One Door (minimum 1200 – 1400)

• Hand washing station
• 80 cm clearance around stretcher
• Room width not less than 2.5 m
• Extra clearance at head in ENT and at foot in Gynecology/Urology -> approx. 1 m
• curtain at the door for those specialties
• Special chair according specialty

FF&E:

• Stretcher • Curtain
• Physiologic monitoring system • Sharps disposal
• Cart dressing • Handwashing
• Diagnostic set, wall mounted • Examination lamp
• Kick bucket
Optional:
• Bed unit
• Monitor
• Computer
• Under bench cabinet with sink
• Wall cupboard

Resuscitation (Trauma)

Design requirements:

• Door (minimum 1200 – 1400)

• Hand washing station
• Clearance at head or foot (approx. 1 m)
• Clearance right and left of stretcher: 150 cm
• Room not less than 14 m^2
• Should have a ceiling pendant (more efficient)
Egypt standards uses Bead head unit, not a ceiling pendant.

FF&E:

• Stretcher • Examination lamp

• Crash cart • Diagnostic set
• Defibrillator • Curtains
• Cart, cabinet storage • Pump, syringe
• Dressing Cart • Aspirator view box
• Physiological Monitoring system • Cabinet
• Bed head unit
• Oximeter
• Ventilator
• ECG
• Kick bucket

OR
➢ Height of the room (not less than 2.70 meters for normal OR and 3 meters for hybrid OR
from finish floor to false ceiling)

➢ Air curtain/ OR laminar flow, supply in the middle (above table), exhaust at the walls at
height 90 cm (indicate that on the plan), electrical outlets on the walls at height 60 cm,
specialty electrical outlets such as that for the bed at 140 cm, NCS at height 120 cm Slide

➢ Pressure of the OR (++) vs clean core (+)

➢ If the room has no dirty corridor, it will only have one door

Support utilities:
➢ Minimum total change air 20
➢ Temperature 20-24
➢ Relative humidity 20-60
➢ Pressure relationship to adjacent area: positive

number of electrical outlets

➢ hybrid OR: 36 with 16 convenient to table placement & 2 on each wall
➢ normal OR: 24 with 8 at each of the 2 ceiling pendants and 2 at each wall
➢ Table should be placed so that patient head is near the door and table is perpendicular to
door

➢ Anaesthesia at patient head and as close as possible to the door and no ceiling pendant on
that side so anaesthesiologist easily gets to anaesthesia machine (put ceiling pendant on
other side)

The difference between general and the specialized OR in design

➢ General OR room
o Min 30 m2
o Clearance at head and foot 1.52 m
o Clearance left and right of bed 2m
o Any side not less than 5.5 m

➢ Neuro, Cardiac, Urology & Ortho OR

o Min 50 m2
o Clearance at head and foot 2.1 m
o Clearance left and right 2.5 m
o Any side not less than 6 m

➢ Hybrid OR
o Min 60 m2
o Any side not less than 7 m

➢ Location of ceiling pendant (2 ceiling pendants placed at head and leg of table)
o Should be away from the door entrance
o 650 mm from the central axis of the surgical table
o 1900 mm from the centre of the table

➢ Location of wall-built items

o Clock near the door
o White board on the right of the patient
o Control panel on the left of the patient
o At the head in the computer system

➢ pass-through window to be opened to dirty corridor

Laboratory, frozen section is commonly needed when there are oncology services, if there are no
oncology services it is not required

FF&E
MRI

Design requirements:
• Centre of magnet 10 m far away from any electrical & communication items

• Clearance 6*8 = 50m2, any side not less than 6m

• the 5-gauss volume (0.5 milli Tesla) floor level

• swing out door if helium used

• door at least width at least 120 cm

• 4 safety zones

• HW inside (inside room) – outside in Egypt

• Power supply, medical gases, clean air

• Control room with shielding window 120 cm

Control room & magnet room together, computer room can be outside or behind the magnet
room, it’s best that it is close but being outside is also correct
CSSD
• Optimal ergonomic working conditions (height adjustable table provided in IAP)
• Rooms that need Bench lighting:
o Receiving contaminated items (Contaminated returns)
o Washroom
o IAP
o Sterilizer loading area

• Decontamination
o stainless steel table for inspection,
o deep sink for manual washing of tools,
o ultrasonic cleaner,
o emergency shower,
o eyewash,
o finally, washer/disinfector or go to pass-through window

• IAP
o assembly work station,
o utility rack, cabinets & shelves,
o counter with inspection light,
o package sealer after assembly,
o shelves
• Sterilization contains the sterilizers and shelves for storage

Dirty utility
TEE Disinfector Room

TACK CARE!!!
The only difference between dirty utility and TEE is that TEE have leakage taster
Crash cart alcove

Assisted Bath Room

Medication Room

Inpatient rooms
Design requirements:

• Door width 120 cm

• Handwashing sink near door
• Bed location not on window wall and accessible to door (easy transfer)
• No obstacles from door to bed or toilet to bed
• Clearence around bed 1 m for each side
• Wheel chair circle in toilet
• Toilet door is sliding or open towards the room (not open inside toilet)

Formula Room

Feeding Room
Housekeeping room
Notes Imp.:
• Observation room: must include internal toilet in ratio 1:4 handwashing station: patients’
bed

• Emergency has two entrances: Ambulance entrance is near resuscitation, Walk-in

entrance is near triage
• Support services:
o Isolation room
o Plaster room
o Wheel chair & stretchers alcove
o Mobile x-ray
o Duty lab
• Treatment and resuscitation may be multiple beds
• Flash sterilizer at the clean core
• There has to be a specialized area or separated room not within the packing space to check
linens, if the function is found in the CSSD department. Linen separated room is a very
important thing to check for IAP
