Tutorial on DFS DTFT and DFT ECC3852 Digital Signal Processing

1. Consider the periodic sequence 𝑥 𝑛 defined as follows:

1, 0 𝑛 4
𝑥𝑛
0, 4 𝑛 8

The sequence 𝑥 𝑛 is periodic with a period 𝑁 8

(a) Find the Discrete Fourier Series (DFS) coefficients 𝑥 𝑘 for 𝑘 1,2, . . ,7.

(b) Write the explicit expression for the periodic sequence 𝑥 𝑛 in terms of its DFS coefficients.

(c) Plot the magnitude and phase of the DFS coefficients 𝑥 𝑘 for 𝑘 1,2, . . ,7.

2. Consider the discrete-time signal 𝑥 𝑛 defined as:

𝑗𝜋𝑛
𝑥𝑛 𝑛 2 exp 𝑢𝑛 1
4

where 𝑢 𝑛 is the unit step function. Find the DTFT X 𝜔 of the signal 𝑥 𝑛 .

3. By means of DFT and IDFT, determine the response of FIR filter with impulse response

ℎ𝑛 1, 2,3
to the input sequence
𝑥𝑛 1,2, 2, 1

4. Assume we want to compute an N-point FFT of an 𝑥 𝑛 audio signal from a compact disc (CD), with
the FFT’s output frequency-domain sample spacing no greater than 1 Hz. If 𝑥 𝑛 ’s sample rate is 𝑓 =
44.1 kHz, what is the number of necessary time samples, N, applied to the FFT?

Given two sequences

5.
𝑥 2,1,2,1
𝑥 1,2,3,4

(a) Find 𝑥 which is a circular convolution of the two sequences.

(b) By means of DFT and IDFT, determine the sequence 𝑥 .
