Theorems, definitions, and concepts to know

• Intermediate Value Theorem. What are the hypotheses and conclusion? What can you
use it for?

• Linearization of a function. Remember that this is just the equation of the tangent line at
the point (a, f (a)). How can you use the linearization to approximate a function value?

• Definition of differential. What is the difference between dx, ∆x, dy, and ∆y? Can you
illustrate this with a sketch?

• Extreme Value Theorem. What are the hypotheses and conclusion? How can you use it?

• Definition of local maximum/minimum, absolute maximum/minimum.

• Rolle’s Theorem. What are the hypotheses and conclusion? How can you use it?

• Mean Value Theorem. What are the hypotheses and conclusion? How can you use it?
How is this theorem similar and different to Rolle’s Theorem?

• Definition of critical number. Given a function f , what are the steps you need to take to
find the critical numbers for f ?

• First Derivative Test. What does this test help you find? When should you use it?

• Definition of concave up/down, points of inflection.

• Second Derivative Test. What does this test help you find? When should you use it?

• How do you find intervals where a function is increasing or decreasing? How do you find
intervals where it is concave up or concave down? How do you find inflection points?

• How do you evaluate a limit at infinity? What do you do if you get an expression of the
form ∞ − ∞ or ∞ · 0? If lim f (x) = c for some finite number c, what does that tell you
x→∞
about the graph of f ?

• What are the steps for sketching a curve?

• What does it mean to optimize a function? What is an objective function? What is a

constraint? What are the steps for optimizing a function?

• What does Newton’s Method help you find? What is the formula for xn+1 in terms of xn ?
Where does this formula come from? Can you derive it?

• What is an antiderivative? Can a function have more than one antiderivative? How do
we write the most general antiderivative?
