ENergy Audit Project
ENergy Audit Project
BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY
(Electrical Engineering)
I am highly grateful to the Director, Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC),
Ludhiana, for providing this opportunity to carry out the present minor project work.
The constant guidance and encouragement received from Dr. Kanwardeep Singh
H.O.D. Electrical Engineering Department, GNDEC Ludhiana has been of great help
in carrying out the project work and is acknowledged with reverential thanks.
I would like to express a deep sense of gratitude and thanks profusely to Project
Guide Prof. Preetinder Singh, without his wise counsel and able guidance, it would
have been impossible to complete the project in this manner.
Certificate
I hereby certify that the work which is being presented in the minor project report
entitled “ENERGY AUDIT OF OLD PRODUCTION BLOCK GROUND FLOOR ”
by “SUKHMAN SINGH VIRK” in partial fulfillment of requirements for the award
of degree of B.Tech. (Electrical) submitted in the Department of Electrical
Engineering at GURU NANAK DEV ENGINEERING COLLEGE, LUDHIANA
under PUNJAB TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, KAPURTHALA is an authentic record
of my own work carried out during a period from ______ to _______under the
guidance of PROF. PREETINDER SINGH. The matter presented in this project
report has not been submitted by me in any other University / Institute for the award
of any Degree or Diploma.
This is to certify that the above statement made by the candidate is correct to the best
of my knowledge.
This report provides energy audit of old production block ground floor and looks into
the energy use scenario and patterns observed during the audit phase. The possible
energy management or conservation schemes are discussed along with possible areas
where various cost reduction proposals can be considered for better efficiency at the
workplace.

1 Introduction
Energy Audit is the way to a systematic approach for decision-making in the area of
managing energy. It attempts to identify all the energy streams in a facility and
balance the total energy inputs with its use. Industrial energy audit is an effective tool
in defining and pursuing energy management programme.
Energy Audit is defined as "the verification, monitoring and analysis of use of energy
including submission of technical report containing recommendations for improving
energy efficiency with cost benefit analysis and an action plan to reduce energy
consumption"[1].
In any industry, the three top operating expenses are often found to be energy (both
electrical and thermal), labour and materials. If one were to relate to the
manageability of the cost or potential cost savings in each of the above components,
energy would invariably emerge as a top ranker, and thus energy management
function constitutes a strategic area for cost reduction. Energy Audit help to
understand more about the ways energy and fuel that are used in any industry, and
help in locating the areas where waste can occur and where scope for improvement
exists. The Energy Audit would provide a positive orientation to the energy cost
reduction, preventive maintenance and quality control programme which are
important for production and utility activities. Such an audit programme will help to
keep focus on variations which occur in the energy costs, availability and reliability of
supply of energy, decide on appropriate energy mix, identify energy conservation
technologies, retrofit for energy conservation equipment etc. In general, Energy Audit
is the translation of conservation ideas into realities, by lending technically feasible
solutions with economic and other organizational considerations within a specified
time frame. The primary objective of Energy Audit is to determine ways to reduce
energy consumption per unit of product output or to lower operating costs. Energy
Audit provides a " bench-mark" (Reference point) for managing energy in the
organization and also provides the basis for planning a more effective use of energy
throughout the organization1[1].

The organization works five days a week. Moreover the energy consumption is
dependent on the time table followed by the organization during that time. Two
sessions are observed during the year vis a vis January to June and August to
December. Considering the said remarks the following load duration observations are
seen:

Major appliances are protected by circuit breakers and keeping awareness boards
on ‘dangers’ and ‘warnings’.
In most the places sign boards of ‘SWITCH OFF THE APPLIANCE BEFORE
LEAVING’ are kept towards saving energy measure to the stake holders.
Installed roof top solar plant
NEMA certified motors are used where possible.

Upgrading existing lights and fixtures with led’s instead of cfl’s and fluorescent
tubes. Hence, allowing reduction in energy consumption along with better
illumination.
Replacing windows with clear float glasses and maximize utilization of natural
lighting
Replacing faulty lights, tubes and fixtures.
