V. 30. A. Read the following passage and answer the questions set on it 9x1=9
This story is about a wedding feast and an elderly cook. My wife and I were attending my school- mate’s
wedding. The wedding is a grand affair with music, dance and a lavish feast.
While the food is being served on the plantain leaf, I have this habit of asking only food items that I want
to eat to be served, while politely refusing other food items. So generally, when the meal is over, my leaf
will be the cleanest (as if no food has been served or eaten), as good as a new leaf.
While the wedding dinner was in progress and I was thoroughly relishing the feast, from the corner of
my eye, I could see and hear some whispers among the serving staff. As I continued with the delicious
meal, I could see and hear some whispers among the serving staff and clearing staff looking at my
plantain leaf and commenting internally, much to the obvious discomfort of my spouse. When I finished
my meal, my leaf was as clean as it was at the beginning of the meal.
As I walked up to wash my hand, an elderly man walked up to me with his hands folded, his eyes filled
with tears, and thanked me. I was a bit startled, and I asked him why he thanked me. He mentioned that
he was the head cook and had been cooking for the last five decades, and he had never seen anyone’s
leaf after meal so clear, not wasting anything, and also who relished his meal so well. He mentioned that
he had attained the fulfilment or success of his life’s purpose and a meaning to his decades of cooking.
It had a profound effect on me, as I am also a trained chef. God resides in food; the one who eats is God,
and what you are eating is also a god.
According to the United Nations, about 25000 people, including more than 10000 children, die from
hunger and related cause daily across the globes that is, approximately 17 people die from hunger each
minute. It is important to teach our children and the next generation the importance of food and how not
to waste it, even though we can afford it.
Today I am very happy that my kids and wife follow mindful eating at social functions, and after the
meal, we proudly flaunt our leaves, not closed but open, to show that we haven’t wasted a single morsel
of food. Let’s start the open leaf policy!
a. What is the profession of narrator in this story?

"She must weep or she will die."

Then they praised him, soft and low,

Call'd him worthy to be loved,
Truest friend and noblest foe;
Yet she neither spoke nor moved.

Stole a maiden from her place,

Lightly to the warrior stepped,

Most mother snakes do not tend their offsprings. They find a safe place to lay eggs and leave
immediately. If they give birth to live young, they vanish as soon as the last one comes out. New born
snakes face the dangers on their own. Out of 3,400 snake species of snakes in the world, only 150 species
show maternal care.
The King Cobra is the only species to make a nest and guard its eggs. The Indian rock python coils it
complete body around its eggs and incubates them. But both species do not stay with younger ones once
they come out of eggs. One snake goes an extra mile to protect its offsprings. It is Southern African Python.
Graham Alexander studied the behaviour of Southern African Python snakes for the first time.
3
Graham Alexander was a student of a university in South Africa. He spent seven years studying
Southern African Pythons. He studied thirty-seven Southern African Pythons in Dinokeng Game Reserve
near Pretoria.
Southern African Pythons are easy to trace in the forest. They are the largest snakes of African
continent. They grow up to five metres and weigh sixty kilograms on average. Alexander caught them and
inserted transmitter chips in their bodies. He monitored their movement through these chips. He also
measured their body temperature.
Southern African Pythons lay eggs in burrows created by other animals. The mother Southern
African Python coils her body around the eggs for three months. The mother snake stays with the eggs for
three months. It does not eat anything during these months. It loses 40% of its weight during this period.
After three months, the baby snakes come out of the eggs. The mother snake stays with the baby snakes for
two more weeks before moving out of the burrow. Hence, the Southern African Python is the most caring
snake of all snakes.
a. What is the average weight of a Southern African Python?

Had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black,
Oh, I kept the first for another day,
Yet knowing how way lends on to way

It may seem like nothing can live in a desert because it’s so dry. But most deserts
are full of life, with plants and animals that have adapted to survive without much
water. Some plants, like cacti, store enough water in their stems to last until the next
rain.
Tribes that live in deserts are often nomadic, which means that they don’t stay
in one place for very long, and instead move around a lot to find new resources. These
people also often farm and herd cattle and other animals which are well adapted to
desert life.
Deserts often have harsh conditions, such as high winds, sandstorms and rugged
terrain, which can make it difficult to travel and survive. Fennec foxes are well-adapted
for life in African and Arabian deserts. Their pale fur camouflages them against the
sand; it also grows on the bottoms of their feet to give them traction while running in
the sand and protects their feet from the hot desert surface.
The Arctic and Antarctic are referred to as polar deserts. 20% of the total deserts
have sand on their surfaces. Cold deserts have a very low temperature in comparison
to hot deserts and are covered with snow or ice. The largest cold desert on Earth is
Antarctica.

Poor Susan has passed by the spot, and has heard
In the silence of morning the song of the Bird.
’Tis a note of enchantment; what ails her? She sees
A mountain ascending, a vision of trees;
Bright volumes of vapour through Lothbury glide,
And a river flows on through the vale of Cheapside.

mud-pies.
I sek out costly playthings, and gather lumps of gold and silver.

WHAT MAKES A WINNER?
Sylvia and I were typical parents: Out daily lives revolved around our boys,
John and Pat. The boys were part of their school band – the St. Joseph’s Institution
Band (SJi) - and played the tuba and the trumpet (musical instrumnts). One year, the
SJI band made it to the finals of the Inter Secondary School Bands Competition.
On the day of the finals, we joined thousands of other anxious parents and
teaachers at the National Stadium and watched the children line up for the march past.
The SJI band stood in the middle of the field with the other school bands. The Anglo-
Chinese Secondary Scool band came marching by, smart and proud; the drum major
led his band through their steps in perfect time. The Raffls School band was equally
good, if not better. They executed the most intricate movements while making beautiful
music. The spectators cheered.
By the time the SJI band came on, the crowds were enthusiastic. They
performed well; not a step out of line, not a note out of tune. The drum major led his
band with grace and majesty.
It seemed to us that the SJI band got the loudest applause. We were jumping
up and down. “We are going to win”, I said. Sylvia nodded her happy agreement.
SJI did not win. When the winner was named, the bands broke into
pandemonium (uproar). The winners shrieked with joy, hugged each other, threw their
hats into the air and generally expressed their delight.
The loosers wandered off or sat on the ground; many were weeping.
Our Children were too far away for us to see their faces; but we noticed that
the SJI boys were still standing, quiet in the midst of all the noise, listening as their
drum major addressed them.
Then he raised his stick, and across the field and the noise, we could make out
the familiar music - the SJI school song. Silence fell on those near the SJI group and
spread further. Something was happening.
Hand Book for Examination 59

Suddenly, The SJI boys marched forward in perfect formation and marched
out in step, still playing the music, bravely carrying their disappointment within.
The departing spectators stopped, fascinated by this display of dignity in defeat.
They began applauding, then cheering the SJI band.
Hail the losers! Even in defeat, they won praise. A few days later, the local
newspaper printed a letter that praised the SJI band for the way it had won the day
despite losing the competition. The writer concluded, “In life knowing how to lose is
as important as knowing how to win....” To me, it seems more important because
how often do we get to win?

a) Who is th narrator of the story?

b) Why did people come to the National Stadium?
c) The people who had gathered were anxious because
i) they were afraid
ii) they wanted their band to win
iii) they did not know how to play music

THE BEST ADVICE THAT I EVER HAD

The best advice I ever had came from one of the greatest souls the world has
ever known – Gandhiji. My husband had recently died. My deep sorrow over his
loss was followed by the humiliating realization that in the eyes of Indian law I had no
individual existenc. Along with other Indian women I had participated for years with
men in the national struggle for freedom, working and suffering side by side with them
until it had been finally achieved –– yet, in law, we women were still recognized only
through our relationship men.
Now, as a widow without a son, I was not entitled to any share of the family
property, nor were my two daughters. I resented this position. I was bitter towards
those members of my family who supported this antiquated (old fashioned) law.
At this time I went to pay my respects to Gandhiji and say goodbuy before
leaving for America to take part in a conference. After our talk, he asked, ‘Hav you
made your peace with your relatives?”
I was amazed that he would take sides against me. I have not quarreled with
anyone’, I replied, ‘but I refuse to have anything to do with those who take advantage
of an outworn law to create a difficult and humiliating situation for me.’
Gandhiji looked out of the window for a moment. Then he turned to me and
smiled and said, “You will go and say goodbuy because courtesy and decency demand
this. In India, we still attach importance to these things.”
“No”, I declared, “not even to please you will I go to those who wish to harm
me.”
“No one can harm you except yourself”, he said, still smiling. “I see enough
bitterness in your heart to cause you injury unless you check it.” I remained silent and
he continued, “You are going to a new country because you are unhappy and want to
escape. Can you escape from yourself? Will you find happiness outside when there
is bitterness in you heart? Think it over. Be a little humble. You have lost a loved
one - that is sorrow enough. Must you inflict further injury on yourself because you
lack courage to cleanse your own heart?”
Hand Book for Examination 73

His words would not leave me. They gave me no peace. After some days of
severe struggle, I decided to visit my brother in law and his family before leaving. I
hadn’t been with them for five minutes when I realized that my visit had brought a
feeling of relief to everyone. I tole them of my plans and asked them for their good
wishes. The effect on me was miraculous. I felt as if a great burden had been lifted
that I was free to be myself. This small gesture was the beginning of a significant change
in me.
To retain a sens of proportion and to keep one’s heart free of hatred are very
important. For all of us, the advice Ganghiji gave me in valuable: “No one can harn
you but yourself.”

me. Like so many teenagers. I struggled to escape from anything that didn’t agree
with my picture of the world. A “brilliant without need of guidance” kid, I rejected
any overt offering of love. In fact, I got angry at the mention of the word, love.
One night, after a particularly difficult day I stormed into my room, shut the
door and got into bed. As I lay down in the privacy of my bed, my hands slipped
under my pillow. There was an envelope. I pulled it out and on the envelope it said,
“To read when you’re alone.”
Since I was alone, no one would know whether I read it or not, so I opened
it. It said “Mike, know life is hard right now, I know you are frustrated and I know
we don’t do everything right. I also know that I lov you completely and nothing you
do or say will ever change that. I am here for you if you ever need to talk, and if you
don’t, that okay. Just know that no matter where you go or what you do in your life.
I will always love you and be proud that you are my son. I’m here for you and I love
you – that will never change Love, mom.
That was the first of several “To read when you’re alone” letters. They were
never mentioned until I was an adult.
Today, I travel the world helping people. I was in Sarasota, teaching a seminar
when, at the end of the day, a lady came up to me and shared the difficulty she was
having with her son. We walked out to the beach, and I told her of my mom’s undying
love and about the “To read when you’re alone” letters. Several weeks later, I got a
card that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son.

That night as I went to bed, I put my hands under my pillow and remembered
the relief I felt every time I got a letter. In the midst of my turbulent teen years, the
letters were the calm assurance that I could be loved in spite of me, not because of
me. Just before I fell asleep I thanked God that my mom knew what I, an angry
teenager, needed. Today, when the seas of life get stormy, I know that just under my
pillow there is that calm assurance that love - consistent, abiding, unconditional love
- change lives.
Glossary: adolescence - teenage; vengance - hatred/revenge; overt - that which is
expressed publicly; turbulnt - violnt; abiding - everlasting.

One morning in a small apartment in Bombay, a girl of sixteen looked up from

the newspaper and said exicitedly, “Pandit Ravi Shankar is playing tomorrow at
Shanmukhananda auditorium. “Sh... Sh....” said her mother pointing to the figure
sleeping on the bed. “You’ll wake him up. You know he needs all the sleep and rest
he can get.”

But the boy on the bed was not asleep “I must hear him and see him.” he said
“It’s the chance of a lifetime.”

Smita bit her lip in self - reproach. She had been so excited on seeing the
announcement that she had not remembered that her brother was dying of cancer.
They had both been learning to play the sitar, but Anant was better than her as in
many other things. Then cancer had struck and they had come to Bombay so that he
could be treated at the cancer hospital there. Whenever they came to Bombay they
stayed with Aunt Sushila. Her apartment was not big but there was always room for
them. They had come with high hopes in the miracles of modern science. But his
condition grew worse with each passing day. And how he wanted to go to the concert.
But his mother said he could go when he was better. Smita’s eyes filled “You must
go, Smita,” her mother whispered “Your father will take you”. “How can I? cried
Smita, “Anant and I have always done things togethr. Suddenly, a daring thought came
to her and she said to herself.” “Why not? There’s no harm in trying it.”

The next day, Smita and her fathr went to the concert. Spellbound, she listened
to the beautiful music, but all the while, the plan she had made the previous evening
remained firmly in her mind. “The chance of a lifetime”. She heard Anant’s voice in
every beat of the tabla.

The concert came to an end. People began to move towards the exit. Smita
wriggled her way towards the stage. She went towards Pandit Ravi Shankar, who
was standing with Ustad Alla Rakha – the great tabla player. Her heart was beating
loudly. As she went up to them her knees felt weak, her tongue dry. With folded
hands, she poured out the story of her sick brother and how he longed to hear them
“Little girl, Panditji is a busy man. Don’t bother him with such requests, said one of
the men standing with the musicians. But Pandit Ravi Shankar smiled, turned to Ustad
Allah Rakha and said, “what shall we do Ustad?”

“Tommorrow morning we perform for the boy”, he said “Yes”, said Panditji,
“it is setteled then.”

An excited Smita came home. Anant was awake, breathing the oxygen from
the cylinder. “Did you hear him?, he whispered.” “I did”, she replied, “and I spoke
to him and he’ll come tomorrow morning with the tabla Ustad and they’ll play for
you.”

The following morning neighbours saw two men get out of taxi.... They could
not believe their eyes. Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Allah Rakha walked up to Aunt
Sushila’s apartment. They went in, sat on the divan and played for the boy, surrounding
him with a great and beautiful happiness as life went out of him, gently, very gently.

IV30. A. Read the following passage and answer the questions set on it. 9  1 = 9
Colours have a lasting effect on people. At present, companies spend millions
of rupees on deciding what colours are the most effective when marketing their
products. This is because colours have a strong influence on the customer’s psychology
and purchase decisior. Nowadays we can buy radios and electric fans in lavender
and pink. Restaurants emphasise the use of flowers and colourful plates. Cars are
coming out in pink and aqua. Even bathroom fixtures are being made in ‘honey dew’
and ‘blond’. Part of the importance of the colour of an object is due to the fact that
the colour affects the way one feels about it. Since we want a vacuum cleaner of an
object is due to the fact that the colour affects the way one feels about it. Since we
want a vacuum cleaner to look light and easy, it is generally coloured in pastels and
light colours. But gardening equipment and atheletic equipment need to look powerful.
That is why we rarely find a lawnmower in pink, but red is fine. Not very long ago,
sheets were always white and refrigerators commonly came in colours like gold, green
and copper. Now these colours are considered old-fashioned.
Popular colours change because fashion inflences everything. In fact, new colours
often spring the fashion industry. It is a lot cheaper to make a blouse or skirt than a
sofa. After people get used to seeing new colours on clothing or towels, they are ready
to accept those colours in carpeting, refrigerators or cars. Colour analysis consultants
have been successful in recent years. People want to choose the most flattering colours
for makeup and clothing. Some car designers are of the view that people may begin
buying cars of the colour that goes well with their skin colouring. This sounds too
faerfetched an idea. It is hard to believe that peoople are that impressionable!

THE REVERIE OF POOR SUSAN
– By William Wordworth
At the corner of Wood Street, when daylight appears,
Hangs a thrush that sings loud, it has sung for three years;
Poor Susan has passed by the spot, and has heard
In the silence of morning the song of the Bird.

“It is a note of enchantment; what ails her? she sees

A mountain ascending, a vision of trees;
Bright volumes of vapour through Lothbury glide,
And a river flows on through the vale of Cheapside.

Green pastures she views in the midst of the dale,

Down which she so often has tripped with her pail;
And a single small cottage, a nest like a dove’s
The one only dwelling on earth that she loves.

She looks, and her heart is in heaven: but they fade,

The mist and the river, the hill and the shade:
The stream will not flow, and the hill will not rise,
And the colours have all passed away from her eyes!
