2. Define the following terms:


a) Precipitation: Precipitation means the water that falls from the sky in the
form of rain, snow, sleet or hail.
b) Humidity: The amount of water-vapour or moisture present in the air is
called humidity.
c) Wind: Moving air is called wind.
d) Temperature: Temperature tells us how hot or cold a place is. It is
measured in Degree Celsius.
3. How do weather forecasting help us?
 It saves lives by giving information to people who are living in hilly and
coastal areas. So that they can move to safer places.
 A farmer can plan the sowing and storing of crops accordingly.
 It helps aero planes to land and take off safely.
 We can plan our day easily by knowing the weather earlier.
4. Name the factors that affect climate of a place. Explain each factors.
a) Distance from the equator or Latitude:
Places that are far away from the equator are cooler than those near the
equator.
b) Height of a place above the sea level or altitude:
Places which are at higher altitude are cooler than the places which are at
lower altitude.
c) Distance from sea:
Places close the sea are cooler than places away from the sea.
d) Direction of the wind:
The places which are getting wind from a hot place will become hot and the
places which are getting wind from a cold place will become cool.
e) Moisture in the air or humidity: Humidity depends on the location of a place
and the direction of wind. Winds that have more moisture cause rainfall where
as dry wind do not cause rainfall.
5. Why is the Earth divided into three climatic zones?
Explain the location and climate in each zones.
The Earth is divided into three climatic zones based on the amount of heat a
region gets from the sun. These are the Torrid Zone, the Temperate zone and
the Frigid Zone.
Torrid Zone:
The area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn is called
Torrid Zone. It is the hottest area because it receives direct sunrays.
Temperate Zone:
The area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic Circle in the Northern
hemisphere and the area between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic
Circle in the southern hemisphere is called the Temperate Zone. This zone gets
moderate climate.
Frigid Zone:
The area located between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole in the Northern
hemisphere and the area between the Antarctic circle and the South pole in
the southern hemisphere is called Frigid Zone.
6. Draw a neat and well-labelled diagram to show the following.
(a) Three climatic zones with different shades
(b) Important lines of latitude
