The question paper is divided into three sections:

Section A: Reading Comprehension 10 marks


Section B: Writing &Grammar 20 marks
Section C: Literature 10 marks
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Attempt all questions.
2. All the answers must be correctly numbered as in the question paper.
3. Attempt all questions in each section before going to the next section.

SECTION A [READING] 10 MARKS
Q.1. Read the passage carefully: 10x1=10 Marks

1. Within the memory of the youngest child , there was a family of rabbits
who lived near a pack of wolves. The wolves announced that they did not like
the way the rabbits were living.
2. One night ,several wolves were killed in an earthquake and this was
blamed on the rabbit, for it is well known that rabbits pound on the ground with
their hind legs and cause earthquakes. On another night , one of the wolves was
killed by a bolt of lightning and this also was blamed on the rabbits , for it was
well known that lettuce eaters caused lightning. The wolves threatened to
civilise the rabbits if they didn’t behave, and the rabbits decided to run away to
a desert island.
3. But the other animals who lived at a great distance , shamed them saying,
“You must stay where you are and be brave. This is no world of escapists. If the
wolves attack you , we will come to your aid, in all probability.”

4. So the rabbits continued to live near the wolves. And one day there was
a terrible flood which drowned a great many wolves. This was blamed on the
rabbits for it is well known that carrot nibblers with long ears cause floods. The
wolves descended on the rabbits on their own good, and imprisoned them in a
dark cave ,for their own protection.
5. When nothing was heard about the rabbits for some weeks, the other
animals demanded to know what had happened to them. The wolves replied
that the rabbits had been eaten and since they had been eaten , the affair was
purely internal matter.
6. “They were trying to escape. said the wolves, “and ,as you know ,this is
no world for escapists.”
1.1] On the basis of your reading the passage, answer the following questions
as briefly as possible.
1. According to the wolves, what caused the earthquake?
2.Why didn’t the rabbits run away from their place of living?
3.What characteristic of the wolves does the phrase ‘for their own good’
reveal?
4. According to the wolves, what caused the terrible floods?
5.Pick out two words /phrases from the passage which the wolves have used
