EEE 3209 Analog Electronics II

Prerequisites:
EEE 3101/ETI 3101 Analogue Electronics I
Purpose of the Course:
The aim of this course is to enable the student to understand the basic operation of small signal
amplifiers, application of power devices and the effect of feedback on amplifier characteristics
and its performance.
Expected Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, the learner should be able to;
1. Understand the concept of feedback in amplifier
2. Analyze and design small signal amplifiers
3. Describe the different types of amplifiers
4. Design of simple firing control circuits
Course Content:
Feedback: feedback effect on amplifier characteristics and performance. Large signal
amplifiers Analysis of class A, B, AB and C amplifiers (push-pull and complementary
symmetry circuits). Calculation of power gain and efficiency, estimation of distortion. Thermal
variation and device parameters. Design of power amplifiers. Differential Amplifiers: Internal
Structure; Input Impedance, Output Impedance, Gain and CMRR; Current Mirror Biasing. Noise
in amplifiers: noise sources, types, signal/noise ratio, noise figure temperature. Common
electronic circuits. Pulse amplifiers: charge control model, rise time, fall time compensation
techniques, cascaded states, radio frequency amplifier models and use of admittance. Miller
effect. Analysis of broad amplifier for various circuits configuration. Design of R.F. tuned and
pulse amplifier.
Laboratory/Practical Exercises
i. Amplifiers Class (A, B, C)
ii. Push-pull, complementary symmetry amplifier
iii. Amplifications with tuned circuits
Mode of Delivery:
Two (2) hour lectures and two (2) hour tutorial per week, and at least five 3-hour laboratory
sessions per semester organized on a rotational basis.
