Ribbon Tabs and Panels

The ribbon is composed of a series of tabs, which are organized into panels that contain many
of the tools and controls available in toolbars.

Some ribbon panels provide access to a dialog box related to that panel. To display the related
dialog box, click the dialog box launcher is denoted by an arrow icon, , in the lower-right
corner of the panel.

Note: You can control which ribbon tabs and panels are displayed. Right-click the ribbon and
click or clear the names of tabs or panels listed on the shortcut menu.

Floating Panels
You can pull a panel off a ribbon tab and into the drawing area or onto another monitor. The
floating panel remains open until you return it to the ribbon, even if you switch ribbon tabs.
14

Slide-out Panels
If you click the arrow in the middle of a panel title, , the panel will expand to display
additional tools and controls. By default, slide-out panels automatically close when you click
another panel. To keep a panel expanded, click the push pin , in the bottom-left corner of
the slide-out panel.

Contextual Ribbon Tabs

When you select a certain type of object or start certain commands, a contextual ribbon tab is
displayed instead of a toolbar or dialog box. The contextual tab closes when you end the
command.

Workspaces and the Ribbon

For products that run on the Windows operating system, a workspace is set of ribbon tabs and
panels, menus, toolbars, and palettes that provide you with a custom, task-oriented drawing
environment. You can change to a different the ribbon by changing the workspace. On the
status bar, click Workspace Switching and select the workspace you want to use. For
example, here are the initial workspaces available in AutoCAD.

METHODS TO WORK IN AUTOCAD

GUI (Graphic User Interface): - In this interface we can choose tools by
selecting its graphical representation or icon to work in AutoCAD.

CUI (Command User Interface): - In this interface we can type the command in
command palette to work in AutoCAD.

DRAWING UNITS

To set the Drawing Units, type UN then press ENTER key.

Then a pop-up window will appear.
Then do the changes as per requirements.
Then click OK.
16

If you change the drawing units, you can specify whether existing objects in the
drawing are scaled to the new units or retain their original size. You can also
specify whether objects inserted from a drawing that uses different units are
scaled to the units in the current drawing, or retain their original size. You can
specify the unit type and precision for linear, angular, area, and volume units. The
precision values specify only the number of decimal places displayed in the
interface. They do not determine the number of decimal places used in the
software to make calculations. When you change the drawing units, the default
options under Area and Volume change to reflect the new drawing units. The
drawing scale options on the Scale tab also change to reflect the new drawing
units.

DIMENSIONS STYLE MANAGER

Creates new styles, sets the current style, modifies styles, sets overrides on the
current style, and compares styles.

DIMSTYLE (Command)

List of Options
The following options are displayed.
Current Dimension Style
Displays the name of the dimension style that is current. The default dimension
style is STANDARD. The current style is applied to dimensions you create.
17

Styles
Lists dimension styles in the drawing. The current style is highlighted. Right-click
in the list to display a shortcut menu with options to set the current style, rename
styles, and delete styles. You cannot delete a style that is current or in use in the
current drawing.

The icon before the style name indicates that the style is annotative.
Unless you select Don't List Styles in Xrefs, dimension styles are displayed in
externally referenced drawings using the syntax for externally referenced named
objects. Although you cannot change, rename, or make current externally
referenced dimension styles, you can create new styles based on them.
The item selected in List controls the dimension styles displayed.
List
Controls the display of styles in the Styles list. Select All Styles if you want to see
all dimension styles in a drawing. Select Styles in Use if you want to see only the
dimension styles currently used by dimensions in the drawing. Don’t List Styles
in Xrefs
When selected, suppresses display of dimension styles in externally referenced
drawings in the Styles list.
Preview
Shows a graphic representation of the style selected in the Styles list.
Description
Describes the style selected in the Styles list relative to the current style. If the
description is longer than the space provided, you can click in the pane and use
arrow keys to scroll down.
Set Current
Sets the style selected under Styles to current. The current style is applied to
dimensions you create.
New
Displays the Create New Dimension Style dialog box, in which you can define a
new dimension style.
Modify
Displays the Modify Dimension Styles dialog box, in which you can modify
dimension styles. Dialog box options are identical to those in the New Dimension
Style dialog box.
Override
Displays the Override Current Style dialog box, in which you can set temporary
overrides to dimension styles. Dialog box options are identical to those in the
18

New Dimension Style dialog box. Overrides are displayed as unsaved changes
under the dimension style in the Styles list.

Compare
Displays the Compare Dimension Styles dialog box, in which you can compare
twodimension styles or list all the properties of one dimension style.

COMMANDS WITH SHORTCUT

You can use command aliases and shortcut keys to start a command without
moving the mouse cursor between the drawing area and the AutoCAD user
interface (UI). Command aliases and shortcut keys can be easier to remember
than the full command name. Creating your own command aliases and shortcut
keys can also help you be more efficient.

Command alias. A shortened name for a command entered at the Command

prompt. For example, CP is an alias for COPY, and Z is an alias for ZOOM. You
define aliases in a product-specific .pgp file, such as acad.pgp or acadlt.pgp.
• Shortcut key. A key combination that starts a command. For example,
Ctrl+S saves a file and Ctrl+1 opens the Properties palette. The function
keys (F1, F2, and so on) are also shortcut keys. Shortcut keys are defined
in a customization (CUIx) file.

TEXT COMMAND
Creates a single-line text object.

You can use single-line text to create one or more lines of text, where each text
line is an independent object that you can move, format, or otherwise modify.
Right-click in the text box to select options on the shortcut menu. While you are
in the TEXT command:
• Click elsewhere in a drawing to start a new set of rows of single-line text
• Press Tab or Shift +Tab to move forward and back between the sets of
single-line text
19

• Press Alt and click a text object to edit a set of text lines
Once you leave the TEXT command, these actions are no longer available.

If TEXT was the last command entered, pressing Enter at the Specify Start Point
of Text prompt skips the prompts for paper height and rotation angle. The text
that you enter in the text box is placed directly beneath the previous line of text.
The point that you specified at the prompt is also stored as the insertion point of
the text.

If the TEXTED system variable is set to 1, text created using TEXT displays the
Edit Text dialog box. If TEXTED is set to 2, the In-Place Text Editor is
displayed.

You can enter special characters and format text by entering Unicode strings and
control codes.
Note: Text that would otherwise be difficult to read (if it is very small, very large,
or is rotated) is displayed at a legible size and is oriented horizontally so that you
can easily read and edit it.

BLOCK COMMAND
When the same object shown multiple times in a diagram then we use block
command. First, we draw that object then type B then press ENTER key. Then a
pop-up window will appear where we first provide a name then select the object
then specify pick point. Then click OK.
To insert the block, we first type I then press ENTER key. Then select the block
by choosing its name. Then click OK. Then click on screen with left mouse
button to put that object where it is required.
20

HATCH COMMAND
Hatching is used in technical drafting to communicate that an area of the drawing
has a particular attribute. It indicates that a section cut through a part is a
particular material or attribute.
For hatching, type H then press ENTER key then type T then press ENTER
key. Then a pop-up window will appear on screen. Then we change pattern,
color, angle and scale according to the requirements. Then click OK.
If we have to edit the hatching, type HEDIT then press ENTER key and click on
the hatched area and do the changes.

ISOMETRIC DRAWING

Isometric projection is a method for visually representing 3D objects in 2D in

technical and engineering drawings. In this projection, all three angles made by
X, Y and Z axis are 120° each. To make isometric drawing, we must first go to
drafting setting by typing DS then press ENTER key. Then go to snap and grid.
Then go to snap type and click on Isometric snap.

Rules on Isometric Drawing: -

1. Ortho should always be on.
2. Use F5 key to change between planes.
30

3. Circle, Rectangle, Mirror and Offset commands should not be used in isometry.
