THE SEVEN (7) SACRAMENT


There are seven Sacraments instituted by Christ for the Salvation of Man
All Seven are divided into Three(3) major areas
I. Sacraments of Initiation
II. Sacraments of Healing
III. Sacraments of Commitment and Service (Mission)
All sacraments touch the most important aspects of our Christian lives

I. Sacraments of Initiation
The first of the sacraments. These are the sacraments that enable us to be part of Christ life.
1. Baptism
The Sacrament were as we are all welcomed into the family of God, the Church
It is the Sacrament that cleanses us from our Original Sin and we are given a new life
Symbols:
I. Water - Signifying LIFE and a symbol that we are cleansed refreshed in spirit
II. Chrism - we are in union with the Holy Spirit through our Priestly mission
III. White Clothing - symbolizes purity and cleanliness
IV. Lighted Candle - symbol that our parent and godparents are our light like Jesus Christ

2. Confirmation
The Sacrament that strengthens our baptism. We receive the mark of the Holy Spirit thus we are called to live a life
of faith according to the teachings and values of Christ. We are already full members of Christ Church.
Symbol:
I. Chrism - strengthens us once more in union with the Holy Spirit
II. Anointing with Chrism - We are sharing the mission Christ thus we are called Christians
III. Laying of Hands - Signifies that we are entrusted of a certain task for God

SEVEN (7) GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT


The Seven Gift of the Holy Spirit are gifts mentioned in Isaiah 11: 2 – 3 in which Christ is it's fullness.
The following are the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in order: (meaning to be discussed)
1. Wisdom
2. Understanding
3. Counsel
4. Fortitude
5. Knowledge
6. Piety
7. Fear of the Lord

3. Holy Eucharist
It is the MOST important in all of our Christian celebration. Here we receive a special meal, Christ himself. It is the
highest form of worship. Here, we receive the full Body and Blood of Christ in the form of the Bread and Wine as
Christ instituted during the meal of the Passover (Last Supper).
We eat a sacred meal, Jesus himself, remembering, and a celebrating his Paschal Mystery (His Passion, Death and
Resurrection). Here we receive Jesus, the Bread of Life!
Two Main Important Parts:
I. The Liturgy of the Word - The Part where as we celebrate the Word of God through the readings from the
Sacred Scriptures
II. The Liturgy of the Eucharist - we celebrate the Institution of Christ Pasch and we partake him in
Communion

II. Sacraments of Healing


The Church celebrates the healing ministry of Christ

4. Reconciliation / Penance or Confession


This is the Sacrament that reconciles us with God. Here we receive forgiveness from our sins the healing Ministry
of the Priest. Our Lord Jesus Christ founded the Sacrament of Repentance and Confession when He said to His
disciples, the pure apostles: “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and
whatever you loose on earth, will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 18:18). Also, after the Resurrection the Lord
said : “‘As the Father sent me, I also send you.’ And when He said this He breathed on them, and said to them,
‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them, if you retain the sins of any they are
retained’” (John 20:21-23).
- This is the sacrament where we find God's unconditional love for man
Steps in the Sacrament of Reconciliation
1. Examination of Conscience
2. Confession of sins
3. Contrition
4. Absolution
5. Penance

5. Anointing of the Sick


The Sacrament were we are healed body and soul in times of near death and(or) illness.
In response to the call of the Apostle James: "Is there anyone sick among you? He should ask for presbyters of the
church. They in turn are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. This prayer uttered in faith
will reclaim the one who is ill and the Lord will restore Him to health. If he has committed any sins to one another,
pray for one another that you may find healing." - James 5: 13 – 16

The Signs of the Sacrament:


I. The Laying of Hands - this action tells us of the healing ministry of Christ who in turn, touches us for our
healing
II. Anointing with holy oil - a sign of the Holy Spirit that gives us all strength

III. The Sacraments of Commitment and Service


The sacraments were we celebrate in communion with the church the ministry of evangelization and mission of
Christ. Through this, we are eternally committed to Christ and to serve him in all aspects of our lives
6. Holy Orders
Those who receive it consecrate their lives in the service of the Holy Mother Church through the Magisterium
It is commonly known as the Sacrament of Priesthood
Signs of the Sacrament:
I. Laying of Hands - a sign of giving the Holy Spirit to the candidate
II. Holy Oil - a sign of deeper sharing to the ministry of Holy Orders
III. The Prayer of Consecration - a prayer that signifies that God makes the candidate Holy for the service of
the church
7. Holy Matrimony (or ambiguously Marriage [civil term])
The sacrament were as man and woman are united as one through the blessing of God in the image of the priest
A union between to loving souls committed to love and faith in Christ and one another
- It calls for men and women to become proc-Creators living up to the message of God to be fruitful and spread
through-out the world

The Signs of the Sacrament:


I. The exchange of Vows - these are eternal promises of love and friendship made by the man and a woman
to each other
II. The ring - signifies unity and oneness
