Introduction
Personal Development shall make you take a deeper look at yourself and analyze your
developmental changes, your skills and traits which can help you meet the various tasks that
you must undertake at this point in your life. It shall provide you with some techniques to meet
stress and other mental health issues with one’s strengths and coping powers. The course shall

• A key factor in personality development is attitude- a settled way of thinking and feeling
about someone or something that typically reflecting in a person’s behavior. Attitude manifests
itself as behavior, as a representative of personality.
• Attitude can be both implicit and explicit. Implicit attitudes are thoughts and feelings that
conscious awareness does not cover. Explicit attitudes can be perceived consciously and
expressed accordingly.

Components of Attitude
1. Affect. In psychology, "affect" refers to emotions or feelings that are directed towards oneself, the environment, or others.
2. Cognition. This term describes how we think. It includes all levels of thoughts, whether about ourselves, our surroundings, or
even our imaginations and perceptions.
3. Behavior. Behavior is the manifestation of our attitudes. Without a clear attitude, our emotions (affect) and thoughts (cognition)
wouldn’t have a solid foundation and would seem baseless.

Factors Affecting the Formation of Attitude


Human beings learn as it interacts with its environment, thus, it experience. Experience, as they say, is the best teacher. Attitudes
can form consequently through this, either from personal encounters or observed consequences.
1. Social factors. Your roles in a social environment and the social norm affect attitude. This is also related to one’s upbringing as
well.
2. Learning or Classical Conditioning. You tend to associate what you have observed in your environment with your
attitude. Your attitude is the product of your observation in your environment.
3. Operant Conditioning. You develop your attitude basing on your experience with your environment. If one experience elicits
pleasurable results, then you continue the same behavior and if not you disregard the behavior.
4. Modelling. Human beings learn their attitude through a model which they imitate.

The Role of Self- concept and Self-esteem


Self-concept is your cognition to ourselves, what you think and know about your identity, personality and individuality. It requires a
lot of self-evaluation and reflection to be able to say that your self-concept is high. Self-esteem is related to self-concept but it is different. It is
how you value yourself. Self-concept is purely or mostly informational while self-esteem is emotionally inclined.

Personality
Attitude is one representation of personality. Personality is the enduring combination of traits, patterns, and
characteristics that distinguish one person from another (Bergner, 2020). Personality traits reflect people’s
characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors. There are so many ways to know our
personality type and discovering oneself. The Johari Window is one helpful tool in discovering the self.
This allows you a review of yourself, the things you know and still do not know and what others see of you.
