Old English by Hamdha

Old English, the language of the Anglo-Saxons spoken from around 450 CE to 1150, is an inflected language with a Germanic vocabulary influenced by Latin, French, and other languages. Following the Norman conquest in 1066, Old English was largely replaced by Anglo-Norman, making it difficult for modern speakers to understand. Beowulf is one of the few ancient poems in Old English that has survived through generations.

Old English

by Hamdha
Old English is the language of the Anglo-Saxons (up to about 1150), an
inflected language with a Germanic vocabulary, very different from modern
English. It was influenced from many languages such as Latin and French
etc. The earliest form of the English language was spoken and written in
Anglo-Saxon Britain from c. 450 CE until c. 1150.
Old English has derived from so many roots from different countries and
kept changing due to invasions.

1066
Invasion
After the Norman conquest in
1066 Old English was replaced,
for a time, by Anglo-Norman.
And as a result of the conquest
the Norman French became the
language of the government.
Old English is not understandable by
normal people like us, because it is a
mixture of different old languages. Only
people who still speak old English can
understand.

Beowulf is one of the four ancient poems in old

English which has been passed down by so many
generations and is still available.
Anglo saxons
In an old village there still remain people who still
speak old English. On the right a man in that village is
being interviewed and he is speaking the language of
the Anglo saxons.
