Question 1

a) It is necessary to understand the operational variables to obtain a good SEM image

with the desired depth of field and resolution.
(i) Why do people often increase acceleration voltage to obtain better resolution
in SEM?
[02 Marks]
(ii) Is there any adverse effect of increasing acceleration voltage on SEM
imaging?
[02 Marks]
(iii) It is necessary to identify the Cu percentage in 0.9mm diameter Cu/Sn coated
steel wire. Briefly discuss how do you use an electron microscope for this
study?
[07 Marks]

b) Two Selected area diffraction patterns of samples A and B are shown in Figure Q1b.

Figure Q1b
i) Sketch the microstructures of A and B.
[02 Marks]
ii) Comments on the microstructures of A and B.
[02 Marks]
c) A transmission electron microscope operating at an accelerating voltage of 100 kV
with a wavelength λ=3.7×10−3 nm and camera length L=180, 88 mm are used. An
SAD pattern of sodium chloride (NaCl) obtained from TEM is shown in Figure Q1c.

Figure Q1c

(i) What are the two basic parameters in spot diffraction patterns that can use
to interpret and index patterns?
[02 Marks]

(ii) Calculate the interplanar spacing

[02 Marks]

(iii) What is the zone axis of the crystal vector ?

[02 Marks]
(iv) Index all spots in the pattern if spot denoted by P and Q represent planes
(2̅00) and (1̅11̅) respectively. .

Question 2

a) Figure Q2(a) shows a micrograph of the demineralized dentine surface. U and E

indicate the un-etched and etched dentine surfaces respectively.

Figure Q2a
(i)Suggest the electron microscopic technique used for dentine surface
examination. Give reasons for your suggestion.
[04 Marks]
(ii)Explain why different features in the areas of U and E
[04 Marks]

b) Briefly explain the effect of vapor pressure on skirt radius.

[03 Marks]

c) Three modes of operations are available in Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS).

What modes of EDS do you recommend for the following situations?

(iii) To identify the distribution of elements within the sample

[02 Marks]
(ii) To identify the elements in the different zones of the sample

c) Tin oxides were synthesized using the hydrothermal synthesis route for photocatalytic
nanostructures. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was performed to investigate
the changes in the Sn-related states under different annealing temperatures. Figure
Q2c shows XPS spectra of Sn 3d for tin oxide-based powders before and after
annealing at 500 and 700 °C. The two XPS spectra represent the spin–orbit doublet
peaks of Sn2+ and Sn4+ states.

Figure Q3b
(i) What is the state of Sn represented by A?
[01 Mark]
(ii) What is the state of Sn represented by B?

[01 Mark]
(iii) Justify your assigning for A and B.

[04 Marks]

(iv) Briefly discuss the effect of temperature on the Sn-related states of tin oxide-
based powders annealed at 500 and 700 °C.
