All India Muslim League SCRIPT

The All India Muslim League was established on December 30, 1906, in Dhaka to represent the interests of Muslims in a predominantly Hindu society, following a period of cultural and economic decline after the end of the Mughal Empire. The party sought separate electorates and reserved seats for Muslims, which they achieved through the Morley-Minto reforms, but later became more separatist in outlook leading up to the partition of India in 1947. After partition, the AIML dissolved and transformed into the All Pakistan Muslim League, while its Indian counterpart, the Indian Union Muslim League, has since lost much of its influence.

ALL INDIA MUSLIM LEAGUE

Team : Aarav Rao, Aryan, Maanya, Vikhyat

To understand the need for the formation of a political party that represented the
Muslim populace we must relate to the historical factors. The Muslim society was
in a deteriorating state post mutiny which saw the end of the Mughal Empire. Due
to the mutiny the Muslims were seen as a threat to the British. Muslim society
was culturally, socially and economically backward.
When the Muslim and Hindu societies were compared, it seemed to be that the
Hindus were much better off. So Sir Syed Ahmad Khan launched a Muslim
Intellectual Movement to counter the Bengali Renaissance, which was led by
upper class Hindus and was a sociopolitical awakening that notably questioned
practices of Sati and the Caste system.
Hindu revivalism and upliftment along with Syed Ahmad Khan’s advice kept the
Muslims away from the Indian National Congress.
The All India Muslim League was founded in Dhaka on 30th December 1906 by
many Muslim Leaders with the assistance of the British Viceroy Lord Minto. It
sought to secure the interests of Muslims in a Hindu Majority country. Some
Notable members in chronological order are Syed Ahmad Khan, Salimullah
Khan, Aga Khan, Jinnah and Muhammad Iqbal.
Inorder to secure the interests of Muslims the party demanded separate
electorates to get fair representation and reserved seats in the Imperial Council
to have a say in the legislature. Which they did receive. This was a part of the
Morley-Minto reforms.
Communal tensions did exist up until WW1, but after WW1 due to the Khilafat
movement there was some degree of unity. After the end of the movement
communalism grew rapidly. Almost 100 riots took place within 4 years in United
Provinces, that is present day Uttar Pradesh. Hindus saw the separate
electorates that the Muslims received and created an organisation to secure the
interests of Hindus which was called the Hindu Mahasabha.
INC ,which was not a religiously aligned party, saw Muslim members leave to join
the AIML. And its ties were severed with both Hindu and Muslim Ultranationalists
for not catering to their communal interests. Relations were growing increasingly
astray.
The AIML rejected the constitution outlined by the Nehru Report and demanded
more for muslims. Interestingly, even the Mahasabha rejected it. It is important to
note initially a federation was proposed, not partition. In the 1940s mass
mobilisation took place and the party became separatist in outlook.
The party was accused of monetarily subsidizing mobs that engaged in
communal violence. After the partition of India in 1947, the All India Muslim
League (AIML) dissolved on August 14,which marked its transition into the
dominant political party we know it as and was renamed to All Pakistan Muslim
League. In India Indian Union Muslim League succeeded it.
The partition triggered mass migrations, with an estimated 14-18 million people
displaced as Hindus and Sikhs moved to India and Muslims to Pakistan. This
migration was accompanied by horrific communal violence, resulting in deaths
estimated between 200,000 and two million.

Today, the party has very little prominence in Pakistan as the All Pakistan Muslim
League. A successor party called the Indian Union Muslim League exists in India,
Kerala and it too does not have much influence as it used to.
