2023 U6 Statistics Test 5 Share

The document is a statistics test containing various problems related to probability, arrangements, expected values, and distributions. It includes questions on seed probabilities, game outcomes, arrangements of letters, book arrangements, expected gains from dice throws, customer purchase probabilities, defective bolts, vehicle counts, and random variables with specified probability density functions. Each question specifies the required calculations and the number of marks allocated.

1. For a certain strain of flower, the probability that, when sown, a seed produces a plant
1
with yellow flowers is 7. Find the minimum number of seeds that should be sown in
order that the probability of obtaining at least one plant with yellow flowers is greater
than 0.99. [5]

2. Two people Romio and Juliet, play a game. A tetrahedral dice is thrown and the first
person to throw a two wins. Romio and Juliet take it in turns to throw the die, starting
with Romio. Find the probability that Juliet wins. [6]

3. Find the different arrangements of letters in the word “MATHEMATICS” in which all
the letters M, A and T are consecutive. [4]

4. A student has 10 different mathematics books, 6 on Pure Mathematics and 4 on

Statistics. Find the number of different ways in which the books can be arranged on a
shelf given that;

a) all the Pure Mathematics books are together and all the statistics books are
together, [3]
b) all the Pure Mathematics books are together. [3]

5. An unbiased tetrahedral die has faces marked 1, 2, 3, 4. If the die lands on the face
marked 1, the player has to play 10 USD.
If it lands on a face marked with a 2 or a 4, the player wins 5 USD and if it lands on a
3, the player wins 3 USD. Find the expected gain in one throw. [5]

6. During a practice session a gunman fires at a target from the same place until he
succeeds. Given that independently for each attempt the probability of hitting a target
0.8, find the probability that he will need at least three attempts to his first success. [3]

7. It is known that 68% of customers visiting a cellular phone shop male a purchase.

(a) Calculate the probability that out of 14 randomly chosen customers, at least 12
make a purchase. [3]
(b) Find the least possible number of customers visiting the shop, given that the
probability of them all making a purchase is less than 0.05. [4]

8. The probability that a bolt is defective is 0.5%. Bolts are packed in boxes of 300.

(a) Find the probability that in a randomly chosen box,

i. there are two defective bolts, [3]
ii. there are more than three defective bolts. [3]

(b) Two boxes are picked at random from the production line. Find the probability that
one has two defective bolts and the other has no defective bolts. [4]

(c) Three boxes are selected at random. Find the probability that they contain no
defective bolts. [4]

9. The number of vehicles passing through a historical monument a few kilometers off a
busy highway is assumed to follow a Poisson distribution. Given that the distribution
for light and heavy vehicles are Poisson with mean 3 and 5 per hour respectively, find
the probability that
i. in the next hour more than 3 light vehicles will drive past. [3]
ii. in the next 45 minutes a total of 3 vehicles will drive past. [5]

10. A random variable has p.d.f 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑘𝑥(6 − 𝑥)2 𝑓𝑜𝑟 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 6.

(a) Find the value of 𝑘.
(b) Calculate,
i. the mean iii. the mode
ii. the standard deviation. [10]
11. X is a random variable with p.d.f given by,
𝑘𝑥 0<𝑥≤1
1
𝑓(𝑥) = { 𝑘(4 − 𝑥) 1 < 𝑥 ≤ 4
3
0 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒
where 𝑘 is a constant.
1
(a) Show that 𝑘 = 2. [3]
(b) Find the cumulative distribution of 𝑓(𝑥). [4]

12. The cumulative distribution of X is given by,

0 𝑥≤0
1 2
𝐹(𝑥) = {𝑥 − 𝑥 0≤𝑥≤2
4
0 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒
Find
