RT 1 CH 4 Light

The document consists of a series of questions and exercises related to the properties of light, including refractive indices, angles of incidence and refraction, and the behavior of light in different media. It covers concepts such as calculating refractive indices, tracing light paths through prisms, and understanding the apparent depth of objects in water. The exercises require application of formulas and principles of optics to solve various problems.

Revision Test 1 – Ch 4 Light

1. The absolute refractive index of glass is 1.5. Explain the statement.

2. The refractive index of glass is 1.5 and that of water is 1.33. What is the refractive
index of glass with respect to water?
3. The refractive index of medium A is 1.5, medium B is 1.7 and medium C is 1.3. In
which of these media will light travel the fastest? Why?
4. A beam of light passes from air to a medium X. If the angle of incidence is 45 and the
angle of refraction is 30, calculate the refractive index of X.
5. A prism of refracting angle 60 has an angle of minimum deviation equal to 36. What
is the angle of incidence?
6. A tank is filled with water to a height of 12.5 cm. The apparent depth of a pin lying at
the bottom of the tank as measured by the microscope is found to be 9.4 cm. What is
the refractive index of water?
If water is replaced by liquid of refractive index 1.63 up to the same height, by what
distance should the microscope be moved to focus on the pin again?
7. A red light of wavelength 780 nm travelling in air enters a glass block and gets
refracted. The wavelength of red-light changes inside the glass and becomes green
light. If the refractive index of glass is 1.5 and speed of light in air is 3x108 m/s, find
(a) the frequency of light in air. (b) the wavelength of green light inside the glass
block.
8. Complete the given diagrams: (All the light rays are monochromatic in nature.)
9. A fish is lying inside a pond. If viewed by a person from above the pond the position
of the fish will appear to be raised. draw a diagram showing the position of the fish
to the observer.
10. Trace the path of the refracted ray in the given diagram.

11. Three rays of light A, B and C are incident at a point O, which is the centre of
semicircular glass block, at different angles of incidence such that angle of incidence
for A<B<C. If the angle BON’ is the critical angle, then draw the path of all the three
rays when they strike the edge XY at point O.

12. The refractive index of water is 1.33. From a point source O inside a vessel
containing water draw 3 rays OA, OB and OC incident on the water air surface at an
angle of 30, 48 and 60 degrees respectively. Show the direction of these rays as they
emerge from the water.
13. The figure below shows two isosceles right angled prisms X and Y. Complete the
diagrams to show the rays emerging from the prism.

14. Three rays of light red, green and blue are incident on the face AB of a right-angled
prism ABC. The critical angle for red light is 46, the critical angle for green light is 44,
the critical angle for blue light is 42.9. If the critical angle for the material of glass is
45, trace the path of the rays through the prism.
