10th Physics Assignment Chap 04

1. Write causes of refraction.

2. Name one property of wave that do not change when the wave passes from one medium to another
medium.
3. How does speed of light in glass change on increasing the wavelength of light?
4. Can the absolute refractive index of a medium be less than one?
5. Explain law of refraction.
6. (i) A ray of light passes from water to air, How does the speed of light change? (il) Which colour of light
travels fastest in any medium except air?
7. If a ray of light passes from medium I to medium I without any change of direction. What can be said
about the refractive indices of these media (Angle i is not 0)?
8. Show lateral displacement of light ray in below glass slab.

9. What do you mean by lateral displacement? Write factors on which it depends.

10. Draw the diagram given below and clearly show the path taken by the emergent ray?

11. A ray of light strikes the surface of a rectangular glass block such that the angle of incidence is (i) O
and (il) 42°. Sketch a diagram to show the approximate path taken by the ray in each case as it passes
through the glass block and emerges.
12. The speed of light in glass in 2 X 105 km/s. What is refractive index of glass?
13. The refractive index of glass with respect to air is 1.5, what is the value of refractive index of air with
respect to glass?
14. Draw refraction of light through prism.
15. A ray of light incident at an angle of incidence i passes though an equilateral glass prism such that the
refractive ray inside the prism is parallel to its base and emerges from the prism at an angle of
emergence e.
(i) How is the angle of emergence e related to the angle on incidence i?
(ii) What can you say about the value of angle of deviation in such a situation?
16. Light passes through a rectangular glass slab and through a triangular glass prism. In what way does
the direction of the two emergent beams differ and why?
17. How does refractive index of a medium depend on the wavelength of light used?
18. With the help of a well-labelled diagram, show that the apparent depth of an object such as a coin in
water is less than its real depth.
19. Draw ray diagram to show the appearance of stick partially immersed in water.
20. A coin placed at the bottom of a beaker appears to be raised by 4 cm. If the refractive index of water is
4/3. Find the depth of the water in the beaker.
21. A coin at the bottom of a trough containing water to a depth of 15 cm appears to be 3.75 cm raised
above from the bottom. Calculate the refractive index of water.
22. Define Critical angle.
23. Which colour light have higher critical angle? Red light or Green light.
24. Write and explain two factors affecting the critical angle.
25. Write two essential conditions required for total internal reflection.
26. Draw total internal reflection in 450-450-900 prism to erect an inverted image without deviation and
also write uses.
27. Draw total internal reflection through an equilateral prism.
28. A ray of light PQ is incident normally on the hypotenuse of a right angled prism ABC as shown in the
diagram.

(i) Copy the diagram and complete the path of the ray PQ till it emerges from the prism. (ii) What is
the value of the angle of deviation of the ray? (iii) Name an instrument where this action of the prism
is used.
