LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Define the function of the human digestive system.

Identify, label, and describe the functions of the mouth,

tongue, teeth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and
large intestine.

Describe what happens to a piece of food as it goes through

the digestive system.
What is a
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?
The digestive system breaks down the food we eat into tiny parts to give us
fuel and the nutrients we need to live. As food breaks down, we get amino
acids from protein, simple sugars from starches, and fatty acids and
glycerol from fats.

THE MOUTH
Digestion begins in the mouth, where the
teeth chew the food. Glands in the mouth 1
produce a digestive juice called saliva. The
tongue mixes the food particles with
saliva. The saliva moistens and softens
the food so that it can be swallowed
easily. When a person swallows food, it
passes through the pharynx, or throat,
into the esophagus.

THE ESOPHAGUS
2
The esophagus is a tube through which
food passes from the pharynx to the
stomach. In a process called peristalsis,
the walls of the esophagus move in waves
to push the food down the tube to the
stomach. Peristalsis also takes place in the
stomach and intestines.

THE STOMACH 3
Everything is blended with digestive juices.
Hydrochloric acid kills bacteria. Enzymes 5
break down proteins.

THE LIVER 4

A green liquid called bile, which is
stored in your liver, is secreted to
break down fats. 5
