Objective:
The objective of this lab is to get familiar with the Agilent LCR meter, the Agilent
Network Analyzer and the Agilent Spectrum Analyzer.

Procedure:
Note: This lab will not require a formal report, but take photos and record all
measurements to include in your brief report.
Experiment 1
In this experiment, we will get familiar with the BK Precision 891 LCR Meter. Normally,
the first step is to correct for errors caused by the test fixture through calibration.
Impedance and admittance present in the test fixture can cause errors in the
measurements and the cable length will introduce a phase shift error. The instrument is
however already calibrated and it is ready to make measurements.
1. Press MEAS FUNC to select the desired measurement parameter. Additional
settings are made with the soft keys on the right hand side. For example, to
measure capacitance and parallel parasitic resistance of a capacitor, select
Cp and Rp. To measure inductance and series resistance of an inductor,
select Ls and Rs as parameters.
2. Connect the component and the measurement will be displayed. Perform the
above steps to measure the capacitance of the capacitor provided by the
instructor. Perform the measurement at 1 KHz with a test signal level of 1
Vrms.
1. Connect the Test Set to the Reflection port of the instrument.
2. Press the green PRESET button.
3. Press Meas 1 and select Reflection.
4. Press Format and select Smith Chart.
5. Press Freq and select the desired start and end frequencies (see below).
6. Calibration: When measuring reflection parameters, one can calibrate the
instrument by connecting three standards: open, short and a load. The
instrument will then extrapolate from these three points and perform error
correction for any load. Perform a calibration by pressing the CAL key, then
1-Port, and follow the prompts.
7. Connect the load provided by the TA (a capacitor or inductor). Press Marker
to display the measurement on the screen.
Set the frequency range to 10 MHz – 100 MHz and connect an open, short and a load
to the test fixture. Note the location of the measurement points on the smith chart and
write down the value of the load.
Next, we will configure the instrument to measure conversion loss. We will perform a
simple experiment and measure the loss in a 10 ft cable.
1. Disconnect the Test set and connect the cable provided by the instructor to
the two ports of the instrument.
2. Press Meas 1 and select More – Conversion Loss
3. Set the frequency range to 10 – 50 MHz.
4. Press Scale and select Autoscale.
5. Use the marker to find the loss at different frequencies.
FM:
1. Press Frequency and set the frequency range to 88 – 108 MHz.
2. Notice that the signals are at the bottom of the screen because the top line is
at 0 dBm. Change this reference line to a more suitable number by pressing
Amplitude and entering a number.
3. Press MKR and use the knob to move the cursor to the highest peak. Press
MKR-> and select Marker ->CF to put this point at the center of the screen.
4. Change the scale of the screen from the default value of 10 dB per division to
a smaller number so that details are more easily observed. Press Amplitude
and select Scale and then enter a number and press enter.

Post-Lab Questions:
Submit your results individually for this lab. This will be a completion grade. Include the
measurement results from the different sections of this lab, including relevant
screenshots and commentary. Emphasize problems that were encountered during this
lab and describe how they were solved.
