QUESTION ONE (30 Marks)

a) Differentiate between whole and natural numbers giving examples in each case.

b) Prove that √2 is indeed an irrational number. [6 Marks]
c) Differentiate between an into function and an onto function.

d) Represent the following on a Venn diagram.
i. 𝐴 ∩ (𝐵 ∪ 𝐶) [2 Marks]

e) For the given function determine the domain, range and whether the function is

a) If 𝐴 = {2,1,3,5}, 𝐵 = {𝑥, 𝑡, 7,1}, 𝐶 = {0,4,6,7,9}, 𝐷 = {0,1,2,3,4,5} and the universal set


given as 𝑈 = {𝑥, 𝑡, 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9}. Determine;
i. (𝐴 ∩ 𝐷) ∪ 𝐵 [3 Marks]

b) Antony sells hamburgers with the choice of ketchup, mustard or relish. One day he sold
256 humburgers: 140 had ketchup, 140 had mustard, 84 had ketchup and relish, 62
had mustard but no relish, 68 had ketchup and mustard 38 had all the three
condiments while twenty had none. Determine:
i. The number sold with relish only? [1 Mark]
ii. The number sold with no relish? [2 Marks]
iii. The number sold with ketchup and relish but not mustard? [2 Marks]
iv. The number with mustard only? [1 Mark]
v. The number with ketchup and mustard but not relish? [1 Mark]
vi. The number with at least two condiments? [1 Mark]
vii. The number with at most two condiments? [1 Mark]
viii. The number with no condiments? [1 Mark]
ix. The number with at least one condiment? [2 Marks]

QUESTION THREE (20 Marks)

a) Differentiate between the following giving examples in each case.


i. Irrational and complex numbers. [4 Marks]
ii. Integers and natural numbers. [4 Marks]
b) Define the following as used in set theory. [4 Marks]
i. Complement.
ii. Intersection
iii. Symmetric difference
iv. Power set
c) By listing, give the elements of the following sets if any.
i. 𝐴 = {𝑥: 𝑥 2 − 11𝑥 + 28 = 0, 𝑥 < 0} [3 Marks]

d) Given two sets which are subsets of each other, what can you say about the two sets?

b) Draw a truth table for the following statements and determine whether they are
tautologies or fallacies.

iii. ∼ (𝑝 ⟶ (𝑞 ⋁ 𝑟)) [5 Marks]
c) Show that 𝑝 ∨ ∼ 𝑞 is equivalent to 𝑞 → 𝑝 ∨ (∼ 𝑝 → ∼ 𝑞) [5 Marks]

a) Find a relation 𝑅 on a set 𝐴 = {1,2,3,4} whose matrix is given below. [4 Marks]
