EcoInnovators Ideathon AI Masterclass 1: Using AI for Good

In collaboration with GLC, The Villars Institute and SchoolNet India

Masterclass Instructors: Dr. Taniya Mishra, Nathan Santiago, Ericka Corral

Brief Overview of AI Topics

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability of machines or computers to perform tasks that typically
require human intelligence. These tasks include learning, problem-solving, decision-making,
understanding language, and recognizing patterns.

Discriminative AI refers to a type of AI model that focuses on distinguishing or classifying data. It

learns to map input data (like images or text) to specific outputs (like categories or labels). For
example, in image recognition, a discriminative AI identifies whether an image is of a cat or a dog.
It works by analyzing the differences between categories.

Supervised learning is a type of machine learning where an AI is trained using labeled data. This
means the input data is paired with the correct output (like pictures of animals labeled as "cat" or
"dog"). The AI learns to find patterns and relationships in the data so it can predict the correct
output for new, unseen inputs.

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content, such as text, images,
music, or videos. It learns patterns from existing data and uses them to generate something
similar but original. For example, it can write a story, create realistic images, or compose music
based on what it has learned.
Prompt Engineering
A prompt is a question, command, or other input you give an AI system (such as a chatbot like
ChatGPT) to generate text, images, or other content. Prompt Engineering is the process of
designing and refining the instructions given to an AI model to get the best and most accurate
responses.

Parts of an Image Generation Prompt

Subject: The main point. What do you want your audience to focus on?
Details: Descriptions of your subject. How would you describe your subject?
Medium: The kind of art it is. How do you want your subject to be shown?

Parts of a Text Generation Prompt

Action: A task given. How can ChatGPT (or any chatbot) help you?
Constraints: Rules for the chatbot to follow. How should ChatGPT present its information?
Context: Background information that helps best answer your prompt. What other information
should ChatGPT know so that it understands what I need?

Benefits of Ethical Considerations

By thinking about the ethical implications of your proposal, you can:
● Empathize with people of differing viewpoints.
● Provide solutions that minimize consequences and maximize benefits for EVERYONE
involved
● Develop knowledge and expertise on the topic, so that you can elevate key questions,
propose ethically sound solutions, and build consensus among stakeholders.

Become an Ethical AI Netizen

An ethical AI netizen is an online user that acts responsibly when creating with or using AI.
Top three ways ways we can be ethical with our use of AI:
1. Understanding AI’s strengths and limits
a. Cross reference with trusted sources (academic sites, the news, etc.)
b. Ask critical questions! "Is this true? Does this make sense?"
2. Communicating openly, when we use AI
a. Be transparent when AI is used, so people trust your work. Adding disclaimers or
labels help people know that it is AI generated.
3. Respecting our own and others’ privacy
a. AI tools often store or process the data you input.
b. Avoid sharing: Confidential information (health, bank information, private
conversations)
c. Why it matters: Protecting your data safeguards you from potential misuse or
breaches.
