LR13

The document outlines two experiments in a Mechatronics and Industrial Automation lab, focusing on the design, simulation, and testing of pneumatic systems using double acting cylinders and solenoid valves. Experiment 13A involves controlling a double acting cylinder with a double solenoid valve, while Experiment 13B automates the return motion of the cylinder using limit switches. Both experiments successfully demonstrate the functioning of pneumatic systems through simulations.

PRLR15 MECHATRONICS AND INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION LAB

Experiment Number: 13A Date: 05/11/2021

Aim: To design, simulate and test the memory control by using a double solenoid valve.

Components Required:
1. Compressed Air Supply (1 nos.)
2. Direction Control Valves (DCV) – [5/2 Way Valve (1 nos.)]
3. Double Acting Cylinder (1 nos.)
4. Solenoid Valve (2 nos.)
5. Push Button (2 nos.)
6. Relay (2 nos.)
7. Make Switch

Circuit Description:

• Compressed Air Supply: A pneumatic device that converts power into potential energy stored
in compressed air.

• Direction Control Valves (DCV): The valve helps the fluid be directed from the pumps to the
cylinders and return to the reservoir.

• Actuator: These are used to convert fluid power into mechanical by doing useful work. The
actuator used here is a linear type as it employs a piston that moves forward and backwards.
The force exertion in a Single acting cylinder would only be in one direction and would be in
two directions in a Double-acting cylinder. Because of the difference in the area present in a
double-acting cylinder, there would be more force in extension than retraction.

• Solenoid Valve: The tasks of a solenoid valve are to shut off, release, dose, distribute or mix
fluids. The valve can use a two-port design to regulate a flow or use a three or more port design
to switch flows between ports.

• Push Button: A push-button is a simple switch mechanism to control some aspect of a machine
or a process. A pneumatic device that converts power into potential energy stored in compressed
air.

• Relay: Relays are switches that open and close circuits electromechanically or electronically.
Relays control one electrical circuit by opening and closing contacts in another circuit.

• Make Switch: Generally, (Make) switches are used to ON/OFF the electrical circuit of electro-
pneumatic circuit (It is of NC type) General make switch that is tailored according to the
component that actuates it. For example, if the make switch is linked via a label to a switch-on
delayed relay, the make switch changes to a switch on delayed make switch in the circuit
diagram.

Working of the Circuits:

1. A double A double acting cylinder is controlled using a 5/2 way double solenoid valve.
2. When push button PB is pressed, the cylinder extends and remains in this position even when
push button PB 1 is released.
3. When push button PB 2 is pressed, the cylinder retracts to the home position and remains in
that position even when push button PB 2.
4. When push-button PB1 is pressed, coil Y1 is energized through relay K1, and valve 1.1 switches
over.
5. The cylinder extends and remains in the forward-end position (Shown in Figure 2) until a signal
is applied in the opposite direction.
6. When push button PB2 is pressed, coil Y2 is energized through relay K2, and valve 1.1
switches over.
7. The cylinder retracts to its home position (Shown in Figure 3) until a signal is applied to coil
Y1 again.
8. In short, a signal to any of the oils switches the valve to the corresponding position.
9. The valve remains in that switching position until a signal is applied to the other coil.

the device operates the contacts to make or break an electrical connection.

Working of the Circuits:

1. A double acting cylinder extends when the push button is pressed on.
2. When the piston reaches the extreme right position, the cylinder retracts automatically.
3. A 5/2 DC single solenoid valve is used as the final control element.
4. The electrical circuit is latched when push-button PB1 is actuated.
5. The valve 1.1 remains in the actuated position even when the push-button PB1 is released.
6. The cylinder then starts moving forward.
7. When the fully extended position of the cylinder is reached, it automatically actuates limit
switch S2.
8. Actuation of the limit switch causes interruption of the electrical circuit.
9. The cylinder then starts retracting automatically.
