GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1) All questions are compulsory. There are 37 questions in all
2) This question paper has four sections: Section A, Section B, Section Cand Section D.
3) Section A contains twenty questions of one mark each, Section B contains seven questions of
two marks each, Section C contains seven questions of three marks each, and Section D
contains three questions of five marks each.
4) There is no overall choice. However, internal choices have been provided in three questions
of one mark, one question of two marks, one questions of three marks and three questions of
five marks weightage. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions

deviation for a triangular prism.

Q14. Toroid is a closed solenoid having field lines enclosed within it only. Why is it not so in the
case of a linear solenoid?

Q15. Zener diodes have higher dopant densities as compared in ordinary p-n junction diodes. How

Q22. (a) Write the necessary conditions for the phenomenon of total internal reflection. [2 marks]
(b) Derive relation between refractive index and critical angle for a given pair of optical media.
OR
Draw a ray diagram to show the image formation by a concave mirror when the object is kept
between its focus and the pole. Using this diagram, derive the magnification formula for the
image found.

Q23. Two cells of emf 1.5 V and 2.0 V having internal resistances 0.2 Ω and 0.3 Ω respectively are
connected in parallel. Calculate the emf and internal resistance of equivalent cell. [2 Marks]
Q24. Two identical ball, each of mass 0.1 x 10-3 kg carry identical charges and are suspended by two
non-conducting threads of equal length. At equilibrium, they position themselves as shown in
figure. Calculate the charge on either ball. [2 Marks]

Q25. A wire carries a current 3 A and consists of a circular arc of radius 5 cm and central angle π/2
radian, and the two straight sections intersect at the centre of the arc when produced.
Calculate the magnetic field in the centre of the arc. [2 Marks]

Q26. A beam of light converges to a point P. A lens is placed in the path of the convergent beam
12 cm from P. At what point does the beam converge if the lens is [2 Marks]

Q27. The wavelength of the first member of Balmer series in the hydrogen spectrum is 6563 A.

Q28. How is a Zener diode fabricated so as to make it a special purpose diode? Draw I-V
characteristics of zener diode and explain the significance of breakdown voltage . [3 Marks]

In the figure given below the input waveform is converted into the output waveform by a
device ‘X’. Name the device and draw its circuit diagram. Mention it’s working [3 Marks]

Q29. Describe Young’s double slit experiment to produce interference pattern due to a
monochromatic source of light. Deduce the expression for the fringe width. [3 Marks]

Q30. How are infrared waves produced? Why are these referred to as ‘heat wave’? Write two
important uses of infrared waves. [3 Marks]

Q31. (i) With the help of labelled diagram, describe briefly the underlying principle and working of a
step up transformer.
(ii) Write any two sources of energy loss in a transformer. [3 Marks]

Q32. Define drift velocity and relaxation time.prove that current density of a metallic conductor is
directly proportional to the drift speed of electrons. [3 Marks]

Q33. A narrow monochromatic beam of light of intensity I is incident on a glass plate as shown in
figure. Another identical glass plate is kept close to the first one and parallel to it. Each glass
plate reflects 25% of light incident on it and transmits the remaining. Find the ratio of
minimum and maximum intensities in the interference pattern formed by two beams
obtained after one reflection at each. [3 Marks]
Q.34 The needle of a dip circle records a dip of 45o at a place. When the upper tip of the needle is
loaded with a small mass, the dip is recorded as 30o. Find the mass attached, if the total
magnetic intensity at the place is 0.2T and the pole strength of the magnetic needle is 20 Am.

Q35 (a) Define electric flux. Write its dimensional formula.


(b) Using Gauss’s Law obtain the expression for the electric field due to a uniformly charged
thin spherical shell of radius R at a point outside the shell. Draw a graph showing the variation
of electric field with r, for r>R and r<R.
OR
(a) Derive the expression for the energy stored in a parallel plate capacitor. Hence obtain the
expression for the energy density of the electric field.
(b) A fully charged parallel plate capacitor is connected across an uncharged identical
capacitor. Show that energy stored in the combination is less than that stored initially in the
single capacitor.

Q 36 (a) Explain using a labelled diagram, the principle and working of a moving coil
galvanometer. What is the function of soft iron core? How does it affect torque experienced
by the coil.
(b) Define current sensitivity of a galvanometer. ‘increasing the current sensitivity does not
necessarily increase voltage sensitivity’? Explain [5 Marks]
OR
(a) Write using Biot-Savart Law, the expression for the magnetic field due to an element
carrying current i at a distance r from it in a vector form. Hence derive the expression
for the magnetic field due to a current carrying loop of radius R at a point P distant x from
its centre along the axis of the loop.
(b) Explain how Biot-Savarat law enables one to express the Ampere’s circuital law in the
integral form

Where i is the total current passing through the surface.

Q37 Trace the rays of light showing the formation of an image due to a point object placed on the
axis of a spherical surface separating the two media of refractive indices n1 and n2. Establish
the relation between the distance of the object, the image and radius of curvature from the
central point of the spherical surface. Using the relation obtained derive the expression of the
lens makers formula. [5 Marks]
OR
a) Draw the labelled ray diagram for formation of image by a compound microscope.
Hence the expression for the total magnification of compound microscope
b) write two advantages of reflecting type telescope over refracting type telescope.
