x and the
Simulation Studio
Thank You! We sincerely appreciate your purchase of the TESS Component Libraries for TRNSYS
v16.x and the TRNSYS Simulation Studio. At TESS, we use the TRNSYS and Studio packages every
day on projects ranging from small solar domestic hot water applications to mega-scale HVAC projects.
During the past 10 years, we have written over 300 components as a necessary step in simulating these
varied projects. By keeping with the TRNSYS tradition of writing component models in the most
general format possible, thereby making them also useful in other projects, we have generated a subset
of models that we thought would make a great addition to the TRNSYS package. After some clean-up
work and extensive testing, we made these models available to the general public first in 2001. The
second version, released in late 2004, represents a major upgrade to the original set of six libraries. With
version 2.0, new components were added to the original libraries, six brand new libraries were added
and the libraries were expanded to not only include TRNSYS Types but also to include Simulation
Studio plug-ins, applications for setting schedules of various kinds, libraries of wall and window data,
and technical documentation. We hope that these components will allow you to do the work you do
faster and allow you to simulate systems that include models not found in the standard TRNSYS library.
As these libraries are constantly expanding, we would appreciate hearing about any comments,
problems, or questions you have on the models – it’s the quickest and surest way to make them better!
Each model is internally documented using the TRNSYS Simulation Studio method of documentation.
Additionally, we have provided a set of electronic manuals that comes with the purchase of the libraries;
the manual set includes a Parameter / Input / Output Reference description as well as full technical
documentation for each model. Each model is also used in one or more example projects. Users may
also purchase hard-copy versions of the documentation; please contact us for current pricing
information.
We have tried to make the installation of the TESS component models as painless as possible. On your
CD, you should find a file called setup.exe. Double click on the setup.exe icon to begin the installation
process.
IMPORTANT: The TESS component libraries should be installed after the TRNSYS v16 program has
been installed. Make sure that all Simulation Studio and TRNSYS applications are closed before
proceeding with the installation. The new component models and the new sample projects will be loaded
automatically when the Simulation Studio is started for the first time after the installation has been
completed.
2. The second presents some detailed installation instructions and the license agreement for the
libraries – please take the time to read this file as it contains last-minute changes to the
program that may not be documented here.
3. The third dialog asks where you would like to install the libraries. In order for the libraries to
interface with TRNSYS and the Simulation Studio correctly, you must specify the location of
the main TRNSYS16 directory in this dialog. This is typically the \Trnsys16 or the \Program
Files\Trnsys16 directory.

4. The next dialog asks you whether you would like to back up any files that are replaced by
this installation program. It is strongly recommended that you back up your files!
5. The next dialog box provides a list of options that you may choose from for the installation.
While installing all of the options is recommended, users may choose not to install several of
the components if limited hard-drive space is a concern. The first several options (up to 12 if
the full libraries are ordered) contain the individual component libraries. By selecting these
options, Simulation Studio model files will be placed in the Trnsys16\Studio\Proformas\ folder,
Simulation Studio project files will be placed in the Trnsys16\Tess Models\Studio Projects\ folder.
Source code will be placed in the Trnsys16\Tess Models\SourceCode directory. We have also
provided Compaq Visual Fortran projects necessary to re-compile and re-link the DLLs
containing the TESS Models in the Trnsys16\Compilers\TESSCvf66 directory. With the “drop in
DLL” features contained in TRNSYS v16, however, only under rare circumstances should
you have to re-link the TESS Library DLLs. The user has the option of installing some
sample catalog data for the models. This is highly recommended as the example projects look
for this information to run.
6. The next dialog box informs you that the libraries are ready to install. Clicking on OK from
this dialog will start the copying process. Upon completion, a finish dialog will appear and
the program will have been installed. Your computer does not have to be restarted in order
for the changes to appear.
7. Start the Simulation Studio and make sure that the “TESS Libraries” show up in the list of
available component models in Simulation Studio. Try some of the TESS example projects
and familiarize yourself with the content of the libraries!
We have added your e-mail address to our TESS mailing list. This list will ONLY be used for
announcements, bug fixes, updates, and information about our TRNSYS products. If you wish to be
removed from this list please let us know.
Again let us say thanks for your purchase of the libraries – we hope you find them to be an excellent
addition to your simulations!
