MODULE 10
COMPARING LIVING AND NON-LIVING THINGS
I. Overview
Living things need food and drink water to get nutrition, energy and hydration. They also go
through a cycle of growth and development. People and animals take in oxygen and give off carbon
dioxide. Plants do the opposite. Living things will die if you keep them in a box and seal it.

Good days kids! How are you?
For this day, you will compare living things from non-living things.
Comparing Living and Non-Living Things
If we look around, we will see various objects. Many are living and just as many are non-living. How
can we distinguish living things.
Here are ways to tell:
Living things need food and water
 People eat food and drink water to get nutrition, energy and hydration.
 Some animals depend on humans for their food and water, but many can get by their own.
 Plants make food in their leaves and get water through their roots.
Living things breathe air
 People and animals take in oxygen and give off oxygen. Plants do the opposite. They take in
carbon dioxide through the openings in their leaves called stomata and they give off oxygen.
Living things will die if keep them in a box and seal it. This is because air will not be able to
enter that box.
Living things more
 People and animals can run, walk, jump, hop, climb, crawl and swim. Th only movement that
some animas can do that no person can do is to fly.
 It is difficult to imagine plants moving, but they do. They move to face the sun. they stretch
out their barks so that the leaves can get sunlight. Some flowers open and close. Vines crawl
and climb.
Living things grow
 People grow and change. they go through different stages of growth and development.
 Plants and animals also go through a cycle of growth and development. A plant starts from a
seed and grow into seedling and becomes a young plant.
 An insect starts as an egg, becomes larva (an immature insect, which can be a maggot,
worm, caterpillar and others, depending on the insect), the pupa (non-feeding stage of an
insect when it undergoes complete change), before becoming a full-grown insect.
Living things give birth or reproduce
 A big house or car does not produce a little house or car. But living things have the ability to
reproduce or give birth to an offspring. Reproduction is one of the most important life
processes.
 People and a lot of animals reproduce or give birth to babies who look like them.
 Many plants come from seeds. People plant them, but animals, wind and water are also
carriers. Some seeds get into animal’s furs and that is how they get carried or spread in
other places. Some are eaten and passed out as wastes. Some are blown by the wind and
air, these seeds grow into mature plants. Plant like potato, ginger, roses, and many others,
produce new plants from different parts such as stems, roots and leaves.
Whether the living things are people, animals or plants-they all reproduce. They all pass on their
traits or physical and behavioral characteristics to their young. Not only will their young look like,
but they are also expected to eat and drink, breathe, move, grow and reproduce.
Non-living things are totally opposite to living things.

For the summary of the lesson, refer on your book, page 167.
VII. Assessment
Write LT if it is living thing and NT if non-living thing.
