Project Proposal - Short Film-1

The short film proposal, titled 'They Weep Foetid Tears', explores vampirism as an allegory for gender-affirming care through the transformation of two characters. It aims to incorporate diegetic and non-diegetic footage, drawing inspiration from Jane Schoenbern’s works, particularly 'I Saw the TV Glow' and 'We’re All Going to the World’s Fair'. The project combines themes of vampires, transgenderism, and found footage aesthetics, reflecting the creator's personal interests and emotional connections to these topics.

Project Proposal For Short Film: “They Weep Foetid Tears”

The short film I plan on making will follow two characters who play with traditional ideas of vampirism

as an extension of their gender, culminating in a gorey transformation scene where one embraces the other

into vampirism as an allegory for gender affirming care. The film will use both diegetic and non-diegetic

footage to tell its story as the transformed character documents the early stages of their turning. In the

dialogue, direction, and theme I am seeking to emulate elements of Jane Scheonbern’s films, specifically I

Saw the TV Glow, and We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. The former I watched and sobbed to, along

with my partner, who’s thoughts on vampirism and gender have helped me greatly in brainstorming for

this short film. I Saw the TV Glow’s themes and symbolism were deeply affecting for both of us and with

this short film I seek to put my thoughts on its themes into my own art. I have always been a pretty big

fan of weird found footage projects so the aesthetics of We’re All Going to the World’s Fair immediately

drew me in as I watched it on my laptop alone in my room, late at night. With my short film I want to pay

homage to the slow transformation of the Fair with my own much faster transformation (due to time

restraints). Overall, I am excited to create this short film as it synthesizes so many things I love, vampires,

transgenderism, found footage elements, and Jane Schoenbern.
