9. Straight line L passes through A(−1, 2), B(1, −8) and C(k, −13).
(a) Find the equation of L. (Express your answer in the general form.)
(b) Find the value of k.
(5 marks)

(a) By the two-point form,

the equation of L is

y + 8 =−5 x + 5
y= −5 x − 3

Answer
11. In the figure, the straight line L1 : x + 3y + 6 = 0 cuts the x-axis
and the y-axis at Q and R respectively. The straight line L2
passes through R and is perpendicular to L1, and cuts the x-axis
at P.
(a) Find the coordinates of Q and R. (3 marks)
(b) (i) Find the slope of L1.
(ii) Find the equation of L2. (Express your answer in the
general form.)
(4 marks)

(a) Putting x = 0 into the equation of L1, we have

0 + 3y + 6 = 0
y= −2
∴ The coordinates of R are (0 , − 2).
Putting y = 0 into the equation of L1, we have
x + 3(0) + 6 = 0
x= −6
∴ The coordinates of Q are (− 6 , 0).

1
(b) (i) Slope of L1 = −
3
(ii)  L1 ⊥ L2
−1
∴ Slope of L2 = =3

3
The equation of L2 is
y + 2 = 3(x – 0)

12. Let f(x) = x − 2x − 4x + 8.
(a) Prove that x + 2 is a factor of f(x). (1 mark)
(b) Factorize f(x). (3 marks)
(c) Using the result of (b), factorize f(x) − (x + 2)(y − 1)2. (3 marks)

(a) f(−2)
= (−2)3 − 2(−2)2 − 4(−2) + 8
=0
∴ x + 2 is a factor of f(x).

(b)
x2 − 4x + 4
x + 2 x3 − 2x 2 − 4x + 8
x3 + 2x 2
− 4x2 − 4x
− 4 x 2 − 8x
4x + 8
4x + 8
∴ f (x) = (x + 2)(x2 – 4x + 4)
= ( x + 2)( x − 2) 2

(c) f(x) − (x + 2)(y − 1)2

= (x + 2)(x − 2)2 − (x + 2)(y − 1)2
= (x + 2)[(x − 2)2 − (y − 1)2]
= (x + 2)[(x − 2 + y − 1)(x − 2 − y + 1)]
= ( x + 2)( x + y − 3)( x − y − 1)

Answer
14. Solve the following equations.
(a) 4 x = 50 (2 marks)
(b) log 3 (2 x − 1) = 3 (2 marks)
1
(c) log(5x − 4) − log(2x − 1) =1 + log (3 marks)
5

(a) 4x = 50
log 4x = log 50
x log 4 = log 50
log 50
x =
log 4
∴ x = 2.82, cor. to 3 sig. fig.

(b) log3 (2x – 1) = 3

By definition, 2x – 1 = 33
2x = 27 + 1
2x = 28
x = 14

(c) log (5 x − 4) − log (2 x − 1) = 1 + log

Answer
Section B (35 marks)

15. The figure shows a right-angled triangle ABC with base 4 cm and height
10 cm. A rectangle CDEF is drawn with its vertices on the sides of the
triangle as shown, where ED = x cm and EF = y cm.
(a) By considering similar triangles, or otherwise, show that
5 x + 2 y = 20. (2 marks)
(b) Express the area A cm 2 of the rectangle CDEF in terms of x.
(3 marks)
(c) By the method of completing the square, find the maximum area of
the rectangle CDEF and the corresponding value of x. (5 marks)

(a) ∆AED ~ ∆ABC

16. When f(x) is divided by x − x + 2 , the quotient is bx – 2 and the remainder is x + b.
(a) Express f(x) in terms of b. (1 mark)
(b) If f(x) is divisible by x + 1, find the value of b. (3 marks)
(c) Factorize f(x). (5 marks)
(d) Someone claims that all the roots of the equation f ( x) = 0 are real numbers.
Do you agree? Explain your answer. (3 marks)

(a) By the division algorithm of polynomial,

f ( x)= (bx − 2)( x 2 − x + 2) + x + b

(b) ∵ f (x) is divisible by x + 1.

∴ f (−1) = 0
[b(−1) − 2][(−1) 2 − (−1) + 2] + (−1) + b =0
(−b − 2)(4) − 1 + b =0
−3b = 9
b = −3

(c) f ( x) =(−3 x − 2)( x 2 − x + 2) + x − 3

=−3 x 3 + 3 x 2 − 6 x − 2 x 2 + 2 x − 4 + x − 3
= −3 x 3 + x 2 − 3 x − 7
By the method of long division,

∴ f ( x) = ( x + 1)(−3 x 2 + 4 x − 7)
= −( x + 1)(3 x 2 − 4 x + 7)

(d) f ( x) = 0
−( x + 1)(3 x 2 − 4 x + 7) =
0
( x + 1)(3 x 2 − 4 x + 7) =
0
x = −1 or 3 x 2 − 4 x + 7 =0
For 3 x − 4 x + 7 =
2
0,
2
∆ = (−4) − 4(3)(7) = −68 < 0
∴ 3x 2 − 4 x + 7 = 0 does not have real roots.
Thus, the claim is disagreed.

Answer
17. In an experiment, the researchers discover a new virus, its symbol is J. It is given that the
increase of the number of virus J (NJ) in the tth minute can be expressed by the following
formula:
50 + t
N J = 800 log
50
(a) What is the increase of the number of virus J in the 5th minute? (2 marks)
(b) It is given that the increase of the number of virus J in the t1th minute is 100 more than
22 minutes ago, find the value of t1. (5 marks)
(Give the answers correct to the nearest integer.)

(a) Substituting t = 5 into the equation,

50 + 5
NJ = 800 log
50
= 33 (cor. to the nearest integer)
∴ In the 5th minute, the increase of the number of virus J is 33.

50 + t1 50 + (t1 − 22)
(b) 800 log − 800 log =100
50 50
50 + t1 50 + (t1 − 22) 1
log − log =
50 50 8
50 + t1 1
log =

1
50 + t1
= 10 8
28 + t1
1 1
50 + t1 = 28 ⋅10 8 + 10 8 ⋅ t1
1
50 − 28 ⋅10 8
t1 = 1
10 8 − 1
t1 = 38 (cor. to the nearest integer)
