Introductory Message
Welcome to Grade 10

This Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division Office of La Carlota City and DepEd Regional Office VI – Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This was
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults)
in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

This Learning Activity Sheet is a self-directed instructional material aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For the learning facilitator:

This Grade 10 Learning Activity Sheet will help you facilitate theteaching-
learning activities for the specified Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with
minimal or no face-to-face encounter between the teacher and the learner. This is
made available to the learners with the references/links to ease independent learning.

For the learner:

This Grade 10 Learning Activity Sheet was developed to help you continue
learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with
meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an activelearner,
carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer
the assessments. This will be returned to your school and teacher on the agreed
schedule

I. Learning Competency with Code

Explain the relationship between population growth and carrying capacity.
(S10LT-IIIg-40)

II. Background Information for Learners

The 2020 World Population Data Sheet projected the increase of world
population from 7.8 billion in 2020 to 9.9 billion by 2050. This level represents an
increase of more than 25% from 2020. This increase in population growth will affect
the carrying capacity of every nation.

For you to understand why the carrying capacity affects population growth,
first understand the following concepts.
Population growth refers to the increase or decrease of the population of the
same organisms in a particular area. Carrying Capacity refers to the highest
number of population that the environment can sustainably support. Carrying
capacity is determined by the number of available resources (food, habitat, water).

A density-independent limiting factor is when the population’s density

does not directly affect in population. These include natural disasters,
temperature, fire, activities, and effects of pollutions. The chances of dying from
any of these limiting factors don’t depend on how many organisms are in the
population. The Density-dependent limiting factor is one of the factors that
affect population growth and affect population density. For example, if a population
reaches a maximum size, there will not be enough resources (water, food, and
shelter) for all individuals.

There are two (2) periods of population growth. The first is Exponential
Growth. A period happens before the population reaches carrying capacity
resources are plenty for every organism, making the population grow faster and
faster as it gets larger. Second is Logistic growth, which happens after the
population reached its carrying capacity population getting smaller and smaller
because every individual competes for limited resources in his environment.

1
Limiting Factor-Is a resource or environmental condition which controls or stops
the population
to increase.
There are limiting factors that depend on the population density, they are:
1. Diseases and parasites- Infectious and deadly diseases like Covid 19 and
parasites grow and spread faster in populated areas.
2. Competition for resources- As the population grows there is a competition
for resources just like food, water, and even space. Organisms with fewer
abilities to compete may not stay longer and can cause a population to
decrease.
3. Predation- The predator population will eventually reach carrying
capacity—there will not be enough prey for all the predators in the
population, since the predators themselves compete for their “prey”
resource. As the number of prey decreases the number of predators also
decreases because there is not enough food to sustain them.
4. Emigration-This happens when individual organisms leave and go to
another place where they can find food, comfort, and resources for survival
and reproduction.

VI. Answer Key

Activity 1
What are we?
1. Population growth refers to the increasing number of the same
organisms in a particular area while carrying capacity refers to the
highest number of population that the environment can sustainably
support.
2. Density- independent limiting factor it is when the population’s density
does not directly affect in population while dependent limiting factor
affects population growth and affect population density.
3. Exponential growth happens before the population reaches carrying
capacity that resources are plenty for every organism, making the
population grow faster and faster as it gets larger while logistic growth
happens after population reached its carrying capacity so population
getting smaller and smaller.
Activity 2
Cause and Effect
Causes Effect on population Effect on carrying
growth capacity
Deforestation Decrease the number of Insufficient supply of
trees and may cause oxygen.
floods and landslides
Overpopulation Thickly populated area Insufficient space, food
and job vacancies.
Animals are May increase or Balancing ecosystem

Air pollution May lead to illness and Supply of oxygen is poor.
eventually death.
People live with Rapid population Scarcity of resources such
sufficient growth as food, space and other
resources and basic necessities.
