SUBJECT: Physics
Ch: Units & Measurements (2024-25)
Name: Worksheet 1 of 2 Roll No:______

1 Deduce the dimensional formulae for the following physical quantities:

a) Gravitational constant:

b) Power:

c) Pressure:

d) Force:

e) Density:

2 Name the physical quantities whose dimensional formulae are as follows:

a) M L2 T −2:

b) M L2 T −3:

c) M T −2 :

d) M L−1 T −2:

3 The value G in CGS system is 6.67 x 10 -8 dyne cm2 g-2. Calculate the value in SI units.

4 Find the value of 60 J per sec on a system that has 100 g, 100 cm and 1 min as the base units.

5 The density of mercury is 13.6 g cm-3 in CGS system. Find its value in SI units.
6 The surface tension of water is 72 dyne cm-1. Express it in S.I units.

7 If the units of force, energy and velocity are 20 N, 200 J and 5 ms -1, find the units of length, mass
and time.

8 Check whether the following equations are dimensionally correct or not:

1 2
a) m v =mgh
2

b) Escape velocity, v= 2
GM
R

c) E=m c2
d) T =

2π l
g

e) v=
√ P
ρ

9 Find the dimensions of a/b in the equation:

F=a √ x+ b t , where F is force, x is distance and t is time.
2

10 The Vander Wall’s equation for a gas is

( a
)
P+ 2 ( V −b )=RT Determine the dimensions of a and b. Hence write the S.I units of a and b.
V

11 The distance covered by a particle in time t is given by x = a + bt + ct 2 + dt3; find the dimensions
of a, b, c and d.

12 Consider a simple pendulum, having a bob attached to a string that oscillates under the action of
a force of gravity. Suppose that the period of oscillation of the simple pendulum depends on its
length (l), mass of the bob (m) and acc. Due to gravity (g). Derive the expression for its time
period using method of dimensions.

13 The velocity 'v' of water waves depends on the wavelength ‘ λ ', density of water ' ρ ' and the
acceleration due to gravity 'g'. Deduce by the method of dimensions the relationship between
these quantities.

14 A planet moves around the sun in nearly circular orbit. Its period of revolution 'T' depends upon:
(i) radius 'r' of orbit
(ii) mass "M' of the sun and
(iii) the gravitational constant G.
Show dimensionally that T2 ∝ r3. Taking the proportionality constant as 2 π , write the expression
for T.

15 State the no. of significant figures in the following:

i) 2.000 m:

ii) 510000 kg:

iii) 0.050 cm:

iv) 1.90 x 1011 kg:

16 Subtract 2.5 x 104 from 3.9 × 105 with due regard to significant figures.

17 Round off the following numbers as indicated:

(i) 15.654 upto 3 digits :

(ii) 15.75 upto 3 digits:

(iii) 15.654 upto 4 digits :

(iv) 15.65 upto 3 digits:

(v) 142667 upto 5 digits:

(vi) 5.996 x 105 upto 3 digits.:

(vii) 0.7995 upto 1 digit:

(viii) 2.5946 × 104 upto 2 digits:

18 The diameter of a circle is 1.06 m. Calculate the area to an appropriate number of significant
figures. Take π = 3.14.

19 5.74 g of a substance occupies 1.2 cm. Express its density keeping significant figures in view.

20 Each side of a cube is measured to be 7.203 m. What are the total surface area and the volume of
the cube to appropriate significant figures ?
