Faculty of Engineering Frist Semester 2024

Mechanical Design and production MED 141 Mechanics of Machines
Department Fall 2024-25

Tutorial 1: (Revision “center of gravity, moment of inertia”)

Name Class

Question 1: Determine the centroid (x, y) of the shaded area.

Question 2: Locate the centroid y of the beam’s cross-sectional area.

Question 3: Locate the center of gravity of the volume. The material is homogeneous.

Question 4: Locate the center of mass of the homogeneous rod bent into the following shape.

Question 5: The truss is made from five members, each having a length of 4 m and a mass of 7 kg /m. If the
mass of the gusset plates at the joints and the thickness of the members can be neglected, determine the
distance d to where the hoisting cable must be attached, so that the truss does not tip (rotate) when it is
lifted.

Question 6: The steel plate is 0.3 m thick and has a density of 7850 kg/m3.
Determine the location of its center of mass. Also find the reactions at the pin
and roller support.

Question 7: Determine the volume of material needed to make the casting.

Question 8: A uniform circular rod with a weight of 8 kg and radius of 10 cm.
It is attached to a pin at C and to the cable AB.
Determine (a) the tension in the cable, (b) the reaction at C.

Question 9: Determine the moment of inertia of the shaded area about the x axis and y axis.

Question 10: Determine y, which locates the centroidal axis x for the cross-sectional area, and then find the
moment of inertia about the x axis.

Question 10: Determine the moment of inertia of the following revolution bodies with respect to the x axis
and express the result in terms of the mass m. The material has a constant density.

Question 12: The pendulum consists of a disk having a mass of 6 kg and slender rods AB and DC which
have a mass of 2 kg/m. Determine the length L of DC so that the center of the mass is at the bearing O.
What is the moment of inertia of the assembly about an axis perpendicular to the page and passing through
point O?
