You will never know love until you own a rattie.

Many people hear the word rat and think negative. They assume rats are dirty and

aggressive. Love comes in many shapes and sizes, but I have never felt so much love from

something so small. The warmth of small companionship is a pocket-sized pick me up. The time

with a rat may be short, but it brings invaluable love, laughter and memories.

One of the most annoying things about rats is that they stash food for the apocalypse. The

thing with a rat is they only live 2-3 years so chances are they will never encounter the

apocalypse. The amount of food my rats used to waste still makes me want to cry. See rats are

very intelligent, they learn that an empty bowl gets filled faster. I would find Cheerios and

sunflower seeds tucked away anywhere and everywhere. After cleaning the cage girls would

always do as follows sniff, explore and destroy. It never mattered what kind of bedding or cage

set up they would always re-design their house accordingly a.k.a. not the way I did it. Ever.

When I had paper bedding on the bottom of the cage, they would push it all up against one side

to build a nest leaving the plastic bottom of the cage uncovered. If I used fleece blankets they

would burrow. If they couldn’t get under the blankets without an issue (I tried everything from

doc tape rocks to bungee cords) they would channel their inner yeezy and chew the blankets to

shreds.

The old line, “don’t judge a book by its cover” highly applies to rats. Unlike some

animals, rats don’t have paws, like us they have hands and feet. Their small pink hands Grasp

and Grab with vigor If they can carry it, it belongs to them. Their little hands prepare for the end

of the world with great speed and focus. Their hands are precise, careful and busy. Their feet are

exactly the opposite clumsy and wide, adding humor. The feet can do two speeds, a goofy

waddle, or the flash. The part of the rat that stands out most is the tail. People seem to have the

most issues with the tail. The automatic assumption is that it is cold and scaly; but in reality, it’s

just a long soft strand hanging half hazard with no rhyme or reason. Peach fuzz and soft skin.

My bunch, “Coco”, “Lolo”, “JoJo” and “Buv”. When we would come home they would be

waiting all lined up holding on to the bars of the cage climbing all over each other excited to

come out and once those doors of the cage open they would all pile loud as if they were just one

big blob. Crawling up the length of my arm, up and out. As if I am a queen wearing all my royal

jewels, rats wrapped around my neck. Their little faces taking everything in, with their curious

eyes and satellite ears.

A rat does not live as long as a dog, cat or a person, but they love more and hard. Like

people rats all have their own Personalities no two rats were the same Some would love to sit on

a shoulder for hours and hours and just watch TV. some like to come out and explore. Rats have

a mind programmed for two things, food and love. They love they give may be temporary but

will last a life time.

Whenever I tell people I have pet rats, they always react in one of two ways. “oh I

absolutely love rats!” or “how disgusting! I hate rats!” I wish they could see them. Clever minds

packed inside a small pocket puppy. Chubby butts and kissable faces, that love you

unconditionally. To know immeasurable love in times of distress, to have a constant reminder of

purpose. It can only come from a rat, and there’s no doubt about that.
