2 (B) 2024 - Capacitor - Ass - 14

The document contains a series of physics assignment questions focused on capacitors, specifically addressing changes in capacitance, electric field, charge, and energy when dielectric materials are introduced or when the configuration of the capacitor is altered. It includes specific scenarios with calculations and explanations for each case, detailing how these physical properties are affected under different conditions. Key concepts such as dielectric constant, energy stored, and the effects of connecting or disconnecting a battery are also discussed.

XII – PHYSICS CAPACITOR ( 2 – B ) ASSIGNMENT – 14

Q.56: On charging a parallel plate capacitor to a potential ‘V’ , the spacing between the plates is
halved and a dielectric medium K (  r ) = 10 is introduced between the plates , without
disconnecting the d.c. source. Explain , using suitable expressions , how the
(i) capacitance , (ii) electric field , and (iii) energy density of the capacitor change.
[ Ans: (i) C / = 20 C (ii) E / = 2E (iii) U / = 40 U ]

Q.57: A parallel plate capacitor with each plate of area A and separation ‘d’ is charged to a potential
difference ‘V’. The battery used to charge it is then disconnected. A dielectric slab of thickness
‘d’ and dielectric constant K is now placed between the plates. What change , if any , will take
place in: CBSE - F
(i) charge on the plates ?
(ii) Electric field of the capacitor ?
(iii) Capacitance of the capacitor? Justify your answer in each case.

Justify your answer in each case. [ Ans: (i) Charge = same (ii) E / = E (iii) C / = K C ]

Q.58: A parallel plate is charged by a battery. When the battery remains connected, a dielectric slab is
inserted in the space between the plates. Explain what changes, if any, occur in the values of :
(i) potential difference between the plates CBSE
(ii) electric field strength between the plates (iii) capacitance
(iv) charge on the plates (v) energy stored in the capacitor?
[ Ans: (i) p.d = same (ii) E.F = same (iii) C / = K C (iv) Q / = K Q (v) U / = KU ]

Q.59: Figure shows two identical capacitors C1 and C 2 each of

1. 5 F capacitance , connected to a battery of 2V. Initially
switch ‘S’ is closed. After sometime ‘S’ is left open and
dielectric slabs of dielectric constant K = 2 are inserted to
fill completely the space between the plates of the capacitors.
How will the (i) charge and (ii) potential difference between
the plates of the capacitors be affected after the slabs are inserted? CBSE
Ans: Case I: When S is closed :
P.D across C1 and C 2 will remain same, i..e V1 = V2 = 2V
 Charge on each capacitor ; Q1 = Q 2 = ( CV ) = ( 1. 5 ) (2) = 3 C
 CASE : 2 : When S is OPEN: ( DISCONNECTED  charge = same & P.D = vary )
( CONNECTED  charge = vary & P.D = same )
C1 remain closed i..e connected ( i..e 2V )
C 2 becomes disconnected ,  charge will remain i..e 3C.
 After the insertion of dielectric slab , the new capacitance of each capacitor becomes:
C1/ = C 2/ = 2 ( 1. 5 F ) = 3 F
(i) Charge on capacitor C1 = C1/ V = ( 3F ) ( 2 V ) = 6 C
Charge on capacitor C 2 remain same i..e 3 C ( disconnected ; charge = same )

(ii) Potential difference across C1 ( connected ) = 2v ( connected ; P.D = same )

Q 2 3 C
Potential difference across C 2 ( disconnected ) = V2/ = = =1V
C 2/ 3 F

Q.60: Derive an expression for the energy stored in a parallel plate capacitor of capacitance C with air
as medium between its plates having charges Q and – Q. Show that this energy can be expressed in
1
terms of electric field as  0 E 2 A d , where A is the area of each plate and ‘d’ is the separation
2
between the plates.
How will the energy stored in a fully charged capacitor change when the separation between the
plates is doubled and the dielectric medium of dielectric constant 4 is introduced between the
plates ? CBSE

Q.61: Define dielectric constant of a medium. Briefly explain why the capacitance of a parallel plate
capacitor increases, on introducing a dielectric medium between the plates.

Q.62: Explain the effect of introducing a dielectric slab between the plates of a parallel plate capacitor
on its capacitance. A dielectric slab of thickness ‘t’ and dielectric constant K is kept between the
plates of a parallel plate capacitor separated by a distance ‘d’ ( t < d ). Derive the expression for
the capacity of the capacitor. CBSE
