Relative Clauses Exercises

24
If you feel like doing a quick review on relative clauses before completing this practice, take a
few minutes to refresh on previous material. When you think you’re ready to begin, come
back to this post and make sure that you complete the exercises in the same order as they’re
presented to you. This is because the level of difficulty increases as you go along. Write down
your answers on a piece of paper or type them into a Word document, and once you’ve
finished with all three tasks, scroll down to check your answers. Let’s get started!

pronouns may be used more than once. Then underline the two sentences where you may
choose to leave out the relative pronoun.

NON-RESTRICTIVE RELATIVE CLAUSES

A non-restrictive relative clause is a relative clause that provides additional information to a sentence.
It uses commas to show that the information is additional.
Example:

I had to fix my printer, which I bought less than a year ago.

Bod, who is a doctor, doesn’t like apples.

Which is used to refer to things or animals.

Example:

That pen, which is green, is mine.

Elephants, which are big animal, can not jump.

Who is used to refer to people.

Example:

Nicki, who is my English teacher, is very friendly.

This girl, who likes dogs, is my sister.

To know when to use non-restrictive relative clauses, note the following:

31
When the noun that it modifies is a name (Kate, who is my sister, has never been Ha Noi)
When the noun that it modifies is a possessive adjectives: my, his, her, their…(My dog, which is
small, has blue eyes.)
When the noun that it refers to goes with this, that, these, those. (These flowers, which are
beautiful, are from Da Lat.)
Note: We don’t use that for Non-restrictive relative clauses. (Jim, that we met yesterday, is very nice.->
Jim, who we met yesterday, is very nice.)

2. PASSIVE VOICE
Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not
known, however, who or what is performing the action.
 Form:
S + TOBE + Vpp (+ BY…)
Example:
That letter is written by me.
 His car was stolen.
The present was sent to him yesterday.
Three cats were killed by a cruel man.
 My homework has been done.

56
When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:
The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive
sentence.
The finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past participle)
The subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive
sentence (or is dropped).

MAKING A WISH:

● We use would and could to talk about wishes for the future:
Example:
I don’t like my work. I wish I could get a better job.
That’s a dreadful noise. I wish it would stop.

● We use past tense forms to talk about wishes for the present:
Example:
I don’t like this place. I wish I lived somewhere more interesting.
These seats are very uncomfortable. I wish we were traveling first
class.

SECOND CONDITIONAL:
Form:
if + past simple, ...would + infinitive
 ses:
U
First, we can use it to talk about things in the future that are probably not
going to be true. Second, we can use it to talk about something in the present
which is impossible, because it's not true.

Example:
If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.
She would travel all over the world if she were rich.
If I were you, I wouldn't go out with that man.

Unit 9
Grammar:
Tag Question
Form:
positive statement negative tag

Snow is white, isn’t it?

negative statement positive tag

You don't like me, do you?

sage: We use tag questions to ask for confirmation. They mean something like: "Is
U
that right?" or "Do you agree?" They are very common in English.

1. NEGATIVE QUESTION TAG:

If the sentence is positive, the question tag is negative:
You have seen that film, haven’t you?
(+) (-)
2. POSITIVE QUESTION TAG:
If the sentence is negative, the question tag is positive:
You haven’t seen that film, have you?
(-) (+)

71
If the sentence contains a negative word (never, hardly…) the question tag is positive:
Ann never goes anywhere, does she?

3. Questions tags consist of …

AUXILIARY VERB + PRONOUN:
● I shouldn’t laugh, should I?
● Sarah was winning, wasn’tshe?

4. We use the auxiliary verb that is used in the previous sentence. If there is
no auxiliary verb, use “do/does” (present tense) and “did” (past tense):
● You live near here, don’t you?
● You turned left, didn’t you?
The pronoun refers to the subject of the previous sentence.

5. Some verbs form question tags differently:

I am → aren’t I?
I’m helpful, aren’t I?
There is → isn’t there?
There is a chemist’s near here, isn’t there?
There are → aren’t there?
There are many shops in the area, aren’t there?
This is / That is → isn’t it?
That’s your wife over there, isn’t it?

6. If there is a modal verb in the main part of the sentence the question tag
uses the same modal verb.
Example:
They couldn’t hear me, could they?
You won’t tell anyone, will you?

7. Be careful with question tags with sentences that start ‘I am’. The
question tag for ‘I am’ is ‘aren’t I’?
Example:
I’m the fastest, aren’t I?
I’m beautiful, aren’t I?

8. Intonation
When we are sure of the answer, the voice goes down in the question tag:
John doesn’t like fish, does he?
→ The speaker knows John doesn’t like fish.
When we are not sure of the answer, the voice goes up:
They traveled to Milan, didn’t they?
→ The speaker doesn’t know if they traveled for Milan or not.
