Design Thinking Assignment:

Establishing Counseling Sessions for
Student Career Focus and Confidence
Building
Introduction
College is a crucial phase where students transition from academics to professional life.
However, many students struggle with career focus and confidence, which directly impacts
their future. Some are unsure about their career path, while others lack the confidence to
present themselves effectively in public. This issue needs immediate attention, as it affects
students’ overall development, job readiness, and mental well-being.

To address this, our college should implement structured counseling sessions that provide
career guidance and confidence-building training. These sessions will help students navigate
their career options, enhance their communication skills, and prepare them for future
challenges. By implementing a well-structured counseling program, we aim to bridge the gap
between academic knowledge and real-world professional expectations.

Problem Identification
1. Lack of Career Focus
● Many students are unaware of various career opportunities available in their field.
● Some lack clarity about their strengths, interests, and long-term goals.
● Without proper guidance, students may end up making uninformed career decisions.
● Peer pressure and societal expectations often lead students to choose career paths
that don’t align with their passion.
● Rapidly changing job market trends make it difficult for students to stay updated with
relevant skills.
● Lack of industry exposure results in students being unprepared for professional life.

2. Low Self-Confidence and Public Speaking Anxiety

● A significant number of students feel nervous while presenting in class, participating
in discussions, or facing interviews.
● Fear of judgment and lack of communication skills prevent students from expressing
themselves effectively.
● Many talented students hesitate to showcase their abilities due to stage fright or self-
doubt.
● This impacts their academic performance, placement opportunities, and leadership
potential.
● Students struggle with networking and building professional relationships due to a
lack of confidence.
● Limited exposure to practical speaking opportunities further weakens their
confidence.

Proposed Solution: Counseling Sessions for Students

1. Career Guidance Sessions

● Conduct workshops and one-on-one counseling to help students explore different
career options.
● Organize mentorship programs where students can interact with industry experts
and alumni.
● Provide aptitude tests and career assessments to help students identify their
strengths and interests.
● Guide students on resume building, interview skills, and job search strategies.
● Arrange career fairs to connect students with potential employers and industry
professionals.
● Offer internship opportunities and hands-on training sessions.
● Introduce job shadowing programs where students can observe professionals in
their chosen field.
● Provide scholarship and study-abroad guidance for students interested in higher
studies.

2. Confidence-Building & Public Speaking Workshops

● Arrange interactive training sessions on communication skills, body language, and
presentation techniques.
● Encourage students to participate in mock presentations, debates, and
storytelling exercises to overcome stage fear.
● Provide personalized coaching for students who need extra help in improving their
confidence.
● Organize theater and drama-based activities to make public speaking practice
engaging.
● Conduct group discussions and panel discussions to boost articulation skills.
● Develop peer mentorship programs where experienced students can help others
overcome confidence issues.
● Implement Toastmasters-style clubs that promote public speaking and leadership.

3. Psychological and Emotional Support

● Some students struggle with anxiety, self-doubt, or fear of failure. Having a college
counselor or psychologist can help students cope with these issues.
● Providing a safe space where students can talk about their fears without judgment.
● Helping students develop a growth mindset, encouraging them to view challenges
as learning opportunities.
● Conduct stress management and mindfulness workshops to improve emotional
resilience.
● Establish peer support groups to encourage students to share their experiences
and motivate each other.
● Implement self-improvement programs focused on self-awareness, emotional
intelligence, and personal development.
