Portfolio Development 02 Rational 2025
Portfolio Development 02 Rational 2025
This module is a progression from PD01 to PD02 with the aim for you the student to further explore,
experiment various creative processes and media within art and design. This second part of the term is to
further explore and contextualise learnt creative processes and research new approaches. These will be
supported with basic theoretical models to support a critical approach to art and design skills and knowledge
in preparation for undergraduate pathways.
PD02 Objectives:
1. Exploration and Experimentation: Engage with various creative processes to push the boundaries of your
preferred medium.
2. Research and Analysis: Conduct in-depth research to inform your artistic practice, including the study of
relevant artists, movements, and techniques that align with your project supporting your Final Creative Piece.
3. Creative Journey Documentation/Journal: Maintain a comprehensive sketchbook to track your creative
progression, including sketches, ideas, processes, and reflections.
4. Final Creative Piece/ Final Major Project: Develop a significant artwork or design project that showcases your
skills and thematic focus following a given brief.
5. Digital Portfolio: Curate a digital portfolio that presents your completed works, process documentation, and
final piece effectively for evaluation.
You will continue to explore a series of practical tasks linked to concepts to undertake a physical end piece or
package – your Final Creative Piece(FCP)/Final Major Project (FMP). You will have demonstrated various
‘ideas’ generation processes to support progressive developments in your sketchbook, proposal, and as the
basis for the production of digital portfolio and encourage you to create a basic website.
The creative work will be made with a limited pallet of materials and found objects. Further research will focus
on related artists and designers within photography and inspirational artists. You may be asked to explore
recycled materials and processes to create 3D work. You will be encouraged to research and discuss
environmental issues pertaining to waste, recycling, and sustainability. In addition, your approach to design
and production is to embrace ‘Recycling, Upcycling and Sustainability’ themes whilst promoting
innovative design e.g., ergonomics, materiality or including passive design
The creative activities will to continue to explore various drawing techniques, elements of art, art movements
and application such as Illustrator, Photoshop, AutoCAD, Sketchup amongst others; and processes such as
printmaking, sculpting, 3D Prototyping, observational and technical sketching, collage, use of media, research
and critical thinking. You will use these methods within your area of study in more detail to support
understanding and methodology.
You will demonstrate a full understanding of art and design at a foundation level and will be able to
implement and present these within their chosen pathway by researching and contextualising the information
obtained for a final outcome for your professional portfolio.

Final Creative Piece / Final Major Project
This brief has been designed for you to continue your art and design skills in experimenting a range of creative
processes to reach an original outcome. You will be able to develop an initial focus on your chosen subject
specialism via project outcomes and present your work in the form Final Creative Piece (FCP)/Final Major
Project (FMP) proposal which will be support by a digital Portfolio; a complete sketchbook, Critical &
Reflective writing/Statement/Journal, and preferred specialism research.
Successful completion indicates that you have obtained improved skills of observation, research and analysis
for project development, a good understanding of your ‘the creative journey’ and equally the importance of
the ‘final creative piece’, and the ability to work to a project brief; indicating and obtained a good
understanding of and ability, to apply the requisite basic understanding and critical thinking skills to enable
you to proceed to a range of programmes at the University.
Assessment Submission
A complete Sketchbook X 1 Digital, 1 x Journal, evidence of research, effective recording, exploration of ideas,
idea development and final outcomes. In addition, it should also demonstrate your ability to write, shown
through annotation, evaluation and reflection and how you have used these practices to inform your design
process, and to include Charting My Academic Journey: Aspirations within the Creative Industries /Portfolio
Development Improvement Plan.

… and what could be in your sketchbook:
Section B: Project Approach - Your plan or intention (approx. 400 + words) (Possible 30%)
Ideas generation: Show these in your sketchbook – describe, discuss the process and creative thinking
You should have a minimum of 5 ideas, or 4 pages of ideas Look back at all of the work you have done.
Are there any shapes of ideas that you think could answer the brief-> your project?
Write about them and redraw them as part of the systems project too.
Look at the research you have done for this project so far.
🖙 Have you come up with ideas that can be linked to the artists/designer/architect research you have done?
🖙 Draw them out. You can discuss these in relation to your project.
🖙 Make sure you write about where they come from in your annotation. (This is called linking or making connections)
Create:
This is about idea development and refinement Idea Development – discuss these. These can include:
This can be done by combining different bits of at least 2 or 3 ideas to make another idea.
Did it work?
If not this is good because it helps you make a decision as to which idea is best.
You need to create at least 2 ideas using this method
Refinement:
When you have chosen you final idea it has to be refined. This is about making changes to improve your idea – discuss these.
These can include:
Experimenting with colour, texture, weight of line you have used
Redrawing the idea several times to improve the quality of drawing
Drawing it larger or smaller
Adding more detail or simplifying it by removing detail
Doing more research to see how you could develop it
If your refinement does not improve the design it does not matter, it is about doing it to find out if it will.
