IX-Maths Enrichment Activities / Math Lab Activity (2021-22)

Our school has well equipped Science laboratories & Mathematics Labs which all conform to the National
Curriculum Framework. Science & Maths lab has been given a distinctive role in the curriculum.
The main objectives that may be achieved are, there is also one of the lab available in the schools.

 Manipulative – inquiry, investigative skills


 Cognitive – critical thinking, application, analysis, synthesis
 Attitudinal – curiosity, interest, objectivity, confidence, collaboration

The school has identified number of experiments and models that the children of Class IX can perform. A
lab manual has been developed by the school. These activities ensure that the children get hands on
experience on varied Science & Maths concepts.

Aims and Objectives of an Enrichment activities


 A problem solving approach (either through, about or for problem solving) that
encompasses the four element model
 Improving pupil attitudes.
 A growing appreciation of mathematics as a discipline.
 recognize that mathematics permeates the world around us
 appreciate the usefulness, power and beauty of mathematics
 enjoy mathematics and develop patience and persistence when solving problems
 understand and be able to use the language, symbols and notation of mathematics
 develop mathematical curiosity and use inductive and deductive reasoning when solving problems
 become confident in using mathematics to analyse and solve problems both in school and in real-life
situations
 develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to pursue further studies in mathematics
 develop abstract, logical and critical thinking and the ability to reflect critically upon their work and
the work of others
 develop a critical appreciation of the use of information and communication technology in
mathematics
 appreciate the international dimension of mathematics and its multicultural and historical
perspectives.

Five Enrichment activities has been conducted
The Math Lab activities reinforce concepts learnt in classroom. Students use the math lab once a
week and teachers use concrete activities and materials to reinforce the concepts taught in class.
1) To construct a Square Root Spiral
2) To find the value of abscissa and ordinates
3) To verify experimentally if two lines intersect.
4) The sum of two adjacent angles is 1800.
5) To draw histogram for classes of equal
widths and varying widths.

1) To construct a square root spiral.


Application:
Through this activity, existence of irrational numbers can be illustrated.

2) To find the values of absicassae and ordinates of various points


given in a Cartesian plane.

Precaution:
The students should be careful
While reading the coordinates,
otherwise
The location of the object will differ.

Application:
This activity is helpful in locating the position of a particular city/place or country on map.

3) To verify experimentally that if two lines intersect, then


i) the vertically opposite angles are equal.
ii) the sum of two adjacent angles is 1800.
iii) the sum of all the four angles is 3600.

Application:
This properties are used in solving many geometrical problems.

4) To verify exterior angle property of a triangle.

Application:
This properties is useful in solving many geometrical
problems.

5) To draw histogram for classes of equal


widths and varying widths.
Application:
Histogram are used in presenting large data in a concise form pictorially.

The learning outcomes of this activities is as follows:-

 know and demonstrate understanding of the concepts from the five branches of mathematics
(number, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and discrete
mathematics)
 use appropriate mathematical concepts and skills to solve problems in both familiar and
unfamiliar situations including those in real-life contexts
 select and apply general rules correctly to solve problems including those in real-life
contexts.
 select and apply appropriate inquiry and mathematical problem-solving techniques
 recognize patterns
 describe patterns as relationships or general rules

 draw conclusions consistent with findings


 justify or prove mathematical relationships and general rules.
