Violet Complex

The aim of the document is to identify the functional group in an organic compound labeled F3. The tests conducted indicate the presence of unsaturation and a phenolic -OH group, confirmed by observations such as decoloration of bromine water and the appearance of violet and red colorations in various tests. The final conclusion is that the sample contains a phenolic -OH group.

Sl.no. Experiment Observation Inference

1. Test for Unsaturation: 1 mL of org. Decolouration of orange-red colour of Unsaturation
sample is dissolved in 2 mL of CCl4 in a bromine water. present.
test tube and 2% solution of bromine in
CCl4 is added.
2. Ferric Chloride test: 2 mL of org.sample Appearance of violet colour. Phenolic -OH
is taken in a test tube and then 1 mL of FeCl3 + 6C6H5OH [Fe(OC6H5)6]3- +3HCl group present.
neutral ferric chloride solution is added Violet complex
to it.
3. Liebermann’s Test: To 1 mL of organic Appearance of red colouration. Phenolic -OH
sample 1-2 crystals of sodium nitrite is group present
added. The mixture is heated for 30 sec and confirmed.
and cooled. Conc. H2SO4 is added
