CHAPTER 1
PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND ITS CORE

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 explain the concepts of basic human movement (motor skills);


 enumerate, discuss, and execute the various basic human movements;
 cite the significance of the activities to the students’ day- to-day living; and
 demonstrate some of the mobility training exercises/activities precisely.

ABSTRACTION

Physical Education, fondly known as PE as its acronym, is a method of instruction that


emphasizes in students the value of regular exercise and leading a healthy lifestyle. Sports,
fitness activities, and dancing are just a few of the activities that are frequently included in
physical education programs to assist students improve their physical fitness and general health.
Most schools provide physical education as a topic, and some may require studying it. The
purpose of physical education is to give students the knowledge and skills they need to live
active and healthy lives.
It is also a method that makes use of physical exercise to assist individuals in acquiring
knowledge, fitness, skills and attitudes that support their best possible growth and well-being.
The development of the full person is facilitated through physical education, which is a short-
term statement of specific outcomes that accumulate cumulatively to achieve a goal.
Physical education is instruction in and via human movement in which several educational goals
are met through vigorous activity such as sports, games, gymnastics, dance, and exercise. It is
crucial component of the whole educational process and attempts to develop individuals who are
mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally fit through the use pf physical activities that have
been chosen and arranged to attain particular goals.
According to:
Oberteuffer (2009), physical education is the culmination of all the experiences that a person has
when moving.
Sharma (2022) disclosed that Physical education is the sum of man’s physical activities selected
as to king and conducted as to outcomes. Meanwhile, Nash( 1929) also stressed that physical
education is that phase of the whole field of education that deals with big muscles activities.
Legal Bases of Physical Education
 Article 1 of the International Charter of Physical Education and Sports, UNESCO,
Paris, 1978 and Recommendation 1, Interdisciplinary Regional Meeting of Experts
on Physical Education, UNESCO, Brisbane Australia, 1962. States that:
“The practice of Physical Education and Sports is a fundamental right for all.”
“And this right should not be treated as different in principle from the right to adequate food,
shelter and medical care”
 Article XIV, section 19, 1986 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines
“The State shall promote Physical Education and encourage sports programs league
competitions, and amateur sports including training for international competition to foster self-
discipline, teamwork and excellence for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry.”
“All educational institutions shall undertake regular sports activities throughout the country and
in cooperation with athletic club and other sectors.”
Foundation of Physical Education
The life of primitive man of necessity involves differents kinds of movements like
walking, dodging, lifting, carrying, throwing, jumping, climbing, pushing, and crawling were all
part of their normal everyday existence. Primitive people developed these physical skills because
they were necessary for survival.
6 Evidences why PE existed during the early times.
1. Ritual - A tradition of worshipping of their gods' through physical activity.
2. Ability to secure food - through hunting.
3. Ability to build shelter - through digging of caves, tree houses.
4. Ability to combat - to struggle against man to man.
5. Ability to battle - through a general military engagement.
6. Sex

THE PRIMORDIAL AIM OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION:

 develop movement skills


 encourage healthy living
 mental wellness
 cultivate principles of routine exercising

SPECIFIC AIMS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION


A. PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

 increasing the student’s endurance, flexibility, strength and coordination.


 exposing students to a range of sports and exercise regiments.

B. LIFELONG HEALTH AND WELLNESS

 establishing healthy habits and improving physical fitness.


 encouraging students to maintain an active lifestyle.
 promoting students’ general physical and mental health.

C. SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING

 stressing the value of regular exercise to students.


 promoting collaboration and social engagement.
 assisting students in acquiring self-control and responsibility.

D. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

 encouraging students to set and pursue personal goals.


 assisting pupils in developing the ability to track and assess their development.

E. COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

 Giving students the chance to practice and learn new skills.


 Fostering a welcome positive learning environment
 Providing a secure and encouraging environment for pupils to student and develop
 Giving the students the chance to study and put good sportsmanship into practice
 Assisting students in understanding the advantages of exercise
OBJECTIVES OF THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The aims of a given programs specific curriculum can affect the objectives of physical education.
However, a few typical objectives for Physical Education are as follows:
A. Encourage healthy living and wellness.
B. Increase motor skills
C. Improve physical fitness
D. Develop teamwork and social skills
E. Strengthen and increase learning about physical activity
F. Develop cognitive and mental skills

IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION


The importance of physical education cannot be overstated. The following are some of the main
advantages of physical education:
A. Improved physical health
B. Improved mental health
C. Development of social skills
D. Enhanced academic performance
E. Increase confidence and self-esteem
Overall, physical education is a crucial competent of a well-rounded education and can have a
positive impact on students, social, emotional, and physical health.

FUNCTIONS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION


A. Biologic Function. This is the first kind of education that utilizes its effect on the body. The
biological aspect of humans is the focus of physical education. It is in charge of creating the
conditions required for the proper maturation and development of the human personality’s innate
functions promptly. In the end, this is reference to personal development and growth.
B. Integrative Function. The integrative purpose of physical education is to promote personality
integration through participation in well-chosen physical education activities. It offers
opportunities for social interaction, relaxation from stresses and tensions, as well as the
improvement of one’s mental faculties.
C. Social Function. Students who participate in physical education gain social skills. These
abilities supports students in developing deep connections with their teacher and with one
another, which enhances the culture of the school. Positive teamwork skills including
cooperation, leadership, cohesion, and accountability are also taught in physical education.

WHY IS PHYSICAL EDUCATION NECESSARY FOR EVERY STUDENTS?


Physical education is crucial because it gives students to strive for. These activities keep their
brains completely occupies, teaching them the value their time. Additionally, they will be more
cooperative and assertive than other students. Because they are determined to improve, those
who exercise frequently are more motivated and eager to succeed in life.
Likewise, students can improve their physical health ans well-being by taking physical education
classes. The activities that students can take part in include team sports, individual sports,
dancing, and fitness activities. It has been shown that it is crucial component of a student’s
education. They gain teamwork skills, maintain their health, and have fun thanks to it.
Additionally, physical education can lower the risk of obesity and assist students in maintaining
a healthy weight.
