I. UNIT TITLE
Unit I: Introduction to Physical Education
Physical Education is “education through the physical”. It aims to develop students’ physical
competence and knowledge of movement and safety, and their ability to use these to perform in
a wide range of activities associated with the development of an active and healthy lifestyle. It
also develops students’ confidence and generic skills, especially those of collaboration,
communication, creativity, critical thinking and aesthetic appreciation. These together with the
nurturing of postive values and attitudes in PE, provide a good foundation for students lifelong
and life-wide learning
LEGAL BASES
In accordance with the pertinent provisions of Republic Act (RA) No. 7722, otherwise known
as the “Higher Education Act of 1994”, and by virtue of the Commission en banc Resolution No.
197-2011 dated August 8, 2011 vesting the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) the
power to set minimum standards for programs and institutions of higher learning and for the
purpose of rationalizing physical education in the country with the end in view of keeping pace
with the demand of global competitiveness; and, pursuant to Article XIV, Section 19 of the
Philippine Constitution which mandates that;
“The state shall promote physical education and encourage sports programs, league
competitions and amateur sports, including training for international competitions to foster self-
discipline, teamwork and excellence for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry. All
educational institutions shall undertake regular sports activities throughout the country in
cooperation with athletic clubs and other sectors.”
And that the following policies, standards and guidelines are hereby adopted and
promulgated by the Commission:
Physical education is a life- long process. Every college student must continue his/her
participation in a developmental program of physical activities that are healthful, intellectually
invigorating, morally uplifting, socially significant, culturally enhancing and environmentally
oriented.
Physical Education today has the potential of contributing to the enhancement of positive
changes which ultimately lead to a better quality of life. This means that through physical
education, the individual can acquire sufficient knowledge and understanding, activity skills, and
desirable attitudes that will eventually contribute to his well-being. In the process, he can
achieve total fitness which will enable him to avoid common illness, use leisure wisely, practice
safety from harm, and overcome life’s stresses. Ultimately, physical education can contribute
towards a relatively lifelong, healthy, happy life and more productive living.
In the 1971 Physical Education Public Information (PEPI) project of the American
Association for Health, Physical Education, policy makers and funding agencies about the
goals and values of Physical Education, PEPI defined a “physically educated “person as
possessing knowledge and skill concerning his or her body and how it functions. The
significance of the contribution of physical education in the lives of students both youths and
adults are highlighted as follows:
“The practice of Physical Education and Sports is a fundamental right for all.”
“And this right should not be treated as different in principle from the right to adequate food,
shelter and medical care.”
Physical Education is an integral part of the education program which aims to promote
optimum development of an individual physically, mentally, socially and emotionally in the
performance of properly selected physical activities.
1. Major Goal of Physical Education – FITNESS is the ability to live a healthy, satisfying, and
useful life.
2. Ultimate Goal of Physical Education – “GOOD LIFE” means that an individual satisfies his
basic needs as physical well-being, love, attention, security and self-respect.
1. Biologic Functions - the enhancement of the individual's growth and development through
body movements.
2. Integrative Functions - personality integration achieved through participation in properly
selected physical education activities.
3. Social Functions - the transmitting of values and standards that are considered consistent
with the needs and ideals of society.
The following objectives of Physical Education are viewed and stated in terms of its
contributions to the outcomes of education which justify its existence in the curriculum.
SUMMARY:
Physical Activities Towards Health and Fitness (PATHF) subjects are classified as “mandatory
subjects” in all programs in any public or private Higher Education Institution as specified in the Policies,
Standards and Guidelines of each program provided by the Commission of Higher Education (CHED).
In our university, each student is required to finish four PATHF subjects and it is one of the
requirements for graduation. That is why, if students are asking for exemptions in participating physical
activities due to illness, teachers require them to secure medical certificate that can support their claim.
But not necessarily exempted, instead, modified activities may be given in lieu of the designed activities
for that particular PATHF subject.
We do not also have provisions in our university for our athletes to be exempted in their PATHF
classes, not even be given for additional credit to their grades, thus, they are still required to attend
PATHF classes and join in the different activities of the class and still be assessed through their
performances.
Indeed, we can say that Physical Education is as important as other subjects like Mathematics,
Science, English, etc. The benefits that we can get from the designed activities in each of the PATHF
subjects are useful for lifetime. We may not be aware and sometimes we are not that open minded to
see its long-term benefits. So may I encourage everyone to participate in the different activities prepared
for you in our PATHF 3 subject, not only for requirement completion in order to pass the subject but
discovering its benefits in your daily living.
