Discovery 8: Lab - Add Devices to the Inventory

Time for a lab activity!

Introduction
Complete this lab exercise to practice what you learned in the “Adding Devices” section of this course. In this
activity, you will learn how to create a credential profile, add a device manually, perform a bulk import, and perform
a device discovery.

Note: Cisco EPN Manager has been reset to a blank configuration for this lab. From this point onwards, you will
populate the system.

Lab Topology
Task 1: Create a Credential Profile
The purpose of this task is to create a credential profile that you can use when adding devices.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:

Step 1
Click the jump host on the lab topology. Open the Google Chrome web browser and click the Cisco EPN
Manager bookmark (https://epnm-40.lab.local) on the toolbar to access your Cisco EPN Manager server.

Step 2
Log in as user root with the password Pass1234.

Step 3
From the main menu, choose Inventory > Device Management > Credential Profiles.

Step 4
From the upper-left corner of the Credentials Profile window, click
+ Add.

Step 5
To create a profile for the Cisco IOS XR devices, configure the following fields:

General Parameters

Profile Name: IOS-XRprofile

Description: IOS-XR device credentials

SNMP Parameters

Version: v2c
Read Community: public
Confirm Read Community: public
Write Community: private
Confirm Write Community: private

Telnet/SSH Parameters

Protocol: Telnet
Username: cisco
Password: cisco
Confirm Password: cisco
Step 6
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes to complete the credential profile.

Step 7
Verify that you can see your credential profile on the Inventory > Device Management > Credential Profiles
page.

Activity Verification
You have completed this task when you attain this result:
You have successfully created a credential profile.

Task 2: Add a Device Manually

In this task, you will add the PE-1 device to the inventory manually.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:

Step 1
On the main menu, choose Inventory > Device Management > Network Devices. The list of currently
managed devices is displayed.

Step 2
From the Network Devices window, click the Add Device button. From the drop-down menu, choose Add
Device.
Step 3
To add device PE-1, enter the following parameters under General Parameters:

IP Address: 192.168.111.51
Credential Profile: IOS-XRprofile

Step 4
Click Verify Credentials. Cisco EPN Manager compares the values in your credential profile with the device in
the network. If they are the same, you will see the following message in the bottom-right corner of the page:

If the verification fails, go back to the previous step and fix your credential set.
Step 5
Click Add. The device initially has an admin status of Un-Managed. To view the latest status of the device, in the
upper-right corner of the window, occasionally click the Refresh icon.

Step 6
When the device addition is complete, you should see a green check mark for reachability, an admin status of
Managed, and a last inventory collection status of Completed for your PE-1 router.

Activity Verification
You have completed this task when you attain this result:
You have manually added a device to the inventory.

Task 3: Perform a Bulk Import of Devices

In this task, you will perform a bulk import of the Cisco NCS 2006 and NCS 2015 devices, using a CSV file.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:

Step 1
From the jump host, click the Files icon on the toolbar and navigate to Home > Documents.

Step 2
Right-click the NCS_Devices.csv file, choose Open With Other Application, and choose Notepadqq.
Step 3
You will use this file to import the Cisco NCS 2006 and NCS 2015 devices. View the contents of the file, but do
not make any changes. Close the Notepadqq application.

Step 4
From the Cisco EPN Manager GUI, navigate to Inventory > Device Management > Network Devices.

Step 5

On the Network Devices window, click the Add Device button . From the drop-down menu, choose Bulk
Import.

Step 6
Configure the following:

Operation: Device
Select CSV File: [Click Choose File.]
Navigate to Home > Documents.
Double-click the NCS_Devices.csv file, or select the file and click Open.

Note: Do not choose the All_Devices.csv file.

The selected file is displayed on the right side of the Choose File button.

Step 7
Click Import. At the prompt, click Yes to proceed. In the upper-right corner of the window, occasionally click the
Refresh icon. When the bulk import is complete, you should see a green check mark for reachability, with an
admin status of Managed and a last inventory collection status of Completed for the devices.
Activity Verification
You have completed this task when you attain this result:
You have successfully performed a bulk import by using a CSV file.

Task 4: Perform a Device Discovery

In this task, you will perform a device discovery.

Activity Procedure
Complete these steps:

Step 1
Navigate to Inventory > Device Management > Discovery.

Step 2
In the upper-right corner of the window, click Discovery Settings.

Step 3
On the Discovery Settings page, click New.

Step 4
Enter the name MyDiscovery_<your-initials> and configure the following:

Expand PingSweep Module.

Check the Enable PingSweep check box.

Click + to add a row.

Enter a seed device of 192.168.111.51 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

Click Save and collapse PingSweep Module.
Step 5
Under Credential Settings, expand Credential Set and configure the following:

Check the Enable Credential Set check box.

Click + to add a row, and enter the following:

IP: 192.168.111.*
Credential Profile: IOS-XRprofile

Click Save and collapse the Credential Set pane.

Note

The IOS-XR profile will be used for all devices on the 192.168.111.0/24 subnet.

Step 6
Click Run Now and close the Discovery Settings window. A new discovery job is listed with a RUNNING status.
Periodically, click the Refresh icon until the job status shows SUCCESS. (This process may take 5 to 10
minutes.)

Step 7
Click the entry in the Name column to view the results. View the discovered devices in the bottom pane.

Step 8
Click the following tabs to view the results:

Reachable
Filtered
Unreachable

Note

It is normal to see devices on the Unreachable tab, because you have just discovered a complete /24 subnet and
there may be unmanaged devices on that subnet. In a production environment, we would investigate any devices
on the subnet that were not discovered, and the failure reason, to determine if this were a problem or merely a
network host not managed by Cisco EPN Manager.

Step 9
Navigate to Inventory > Device Management > Network Devices. With the discovery process complete, you
should see a green check mark for reachability, with an admin status of Managed and last inventory collection
status of Completed, for all the devices in the inventory.
You should now see all four PE devices, the two XRv9K devices, and the NCS2006 and NCS2015 devices in the
inventory,

Step 10
Verify that the dynamic device groups that you created in an earlier lab contain the optical and core devices. In
the Device Groups pane, expand Location > All Locations and choose the Core and Optical groups in turn.

Activity Verification
You have completed this task when you attain this result:
You have successfully configured discovery settings and discovered the network.
