Student Guide

Assignment Summary
For this assignment, you will Identify and describe a current public health policy.
You will create an outline using data to support an argument for or against the

Background Information
Governments enact policies or plans to promote the general welfare of people. They
can create policies in areas such as safety, schooling, and nutrition. Some actions
deal with public health, or the well-being of the country as a whole. Public health
policies promote wellness, research disease and injury prevention, and detect,
prevent and respond to infectious diseases. For example, U.S. state governments
have passed laws requiring wearing seatbelts and motorcycle helmets to prevent
injury and save lives.
Citizens of the United States have individual rights, but they also have many
responsibilities. One of these duties is to be informed about public issues, and
communicate ideas about policies with public officials. Citizens can influence public
policy through participating in government through discussion, attending meetings,
